West Virginia had national championship aspirations as recently as five weeks ago, rising to No. 5 in the BCS rankings. Now, following their fifth straight loss, the Mountaineers’ season is going off the rails.
And head coach Dana Holgorsen is starting to lose it. If he hasn’t lost it already.
During West Virginia’s nationally televised loss to Oklahoma on Saturday night, a microphone in the Mountaineers huddle at the end of the first half caught Holgorsen dropping an F-bomb (and not encouragingly) when sharing his Hail Mary play call with the WVU offense.
As colorful as that was, it paled in comparison to his third quarter meltdown. After the Mountaineers were stuffed on a fourth-and-1 play, Holgorsen exploded at both his players and the referees, who he felt had missed a pass interference penalty on first down.
Holgorsen once hoped this season would never end. Now, West Virginia’s final game can’t come soon enough.
