New Yorker staff writer and well-known author Malcolm Gladwell is on a crusade to ban college football and recently appeared on CNN’s “Fareed Zakaria GPS” to compare the sport to dog fighting. This comparison by Gladwell is not new, but his appearance on national television will certainly stir the debate again.
Because of the long-term neurological consequences of playing football, Gladwell goes into detail about the hypocrisy of those outraged by Michael Vick’s dog fighting who spend their Saturdays watching teenagers smash their heads into each other. The comparison is obviously flawed (dog fighting is not optional, college football isn’t played to the death) but it’s an opinion that will continue to gain support as more research shows the damaging long-term effects of football.
