Who says that ridiculous promotional campaigns for college athletes have to be confined to Heisman Trophy hopefuls?
With senior center Jeff Withey closing in on the school record for career blocked shots, Kansas athletics launched WitheyBlockParty.com, featuring radio calls of each of his blocks this season and a countdown to his seemingly inevitable breaking of Greg Ostertag’s Jayhawks mark (258, which Withey is seven short of).
It’s an inspired idea … but not nearly as inspired as the website’s promotional video. Playing on the whole “Block Party” theme, highlights of Withey’s blocks are set to disco music, with the big man appearing in an awesomely atrocious 1970s-style shirt and doing his rendition of “The Fishing Reel.”
That’s not even the best part of the video. That honor goes to Bill Self, for his brilliant cameo at the 34-second mark sporting a Saturday Night Fever-like getup. Well done, coach.
