W. Virginia Fans Riot, Set Fires After Win

You can try taking away couch burning from West Virginia fans, but you’ll never take away their souls. Or their penchant for football-related rowdiness.

Several street fires were reported in downtown Morgantown, WV, on Saturday night and early Sunday morning following the Mountaineers’ 48–45 road win over Texas. Riot police were dispersed to the scene to try and settle things down.

West Virginia may be in its first year of playing in a bigger, better conference in the Big 12. But an upgrade in digs seemingly won’t make Mountaineers fans any less rowdy. To wit: A Twitter search for Morgantown riots yielded the following:

    Believe it or not, everyone in West Virginia are not mindless morons that have to take to the streets rioting to celebrate an expected win. Btw… I think the word riot is a bit much. The word riot implies violence and mass property destruction.
    What you had was a lot of super fired up, hootin’, hollerin’, hell raisin’ Mountaineer fans that were enjoyin’ a victory celebration with a couple of bonfires. (The cars burned last week was accidental) But they certainly weren’t rioting! Just exuberant partyin’. Whoo Hoo!!!

      If the car fires last week were accidental, then why is there a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest?  I live up the street on Snyder, and the police told us a couch was placed against the back of a truck.  I’m sorry, this crap has gone too far.  Let’s party, but stop this burning madness.

    The Texas fans should be rioting as they are almost half way  through what will be a third mediocre season in a row. WV deserves their ranking as they are the latest team to shred the UT defense.

    if you’ve never spent any time in and around the great state of West “by God ” Virginia you will certainly not appreciate the ritual of “couch burning”. it’s only a riot when the police , looking for something to do (there ain’t much to do in ole morgantown), start treating the students like ter-
    rorists out to overthrow the government. burning couches are a ‘signal fire” to come out and
    socialize . FIRE IS A DANGEROUS SUBSTANCE . . .but a burning couch in the middle of paved street is only a means used by students to start a block party .

    I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU.  WV IS THE COUNTRY’S BEST KEPT SECRET.  OUR WVU TEAM IS A CLASS ACT.  TEXAS SHOWED THEIR IGNORANCE ON THE FIELD LAST NIGHT

    Couch Burning? Please celebrate responsibly and portray the Pride of WV with style and class. This destructive action gives WVU a bad rap and the Mountaineers deserve better PR for their awesome efforts and outstanding achievements.

    I live 20 miles north of DKR stadium in Austin and am a longhorn fan.  I have no problem telling the fans of West Virginia that y’all played an awesome game, played hard, fair and with class.  On Saturday night the better team prevailed.

    Unfortunately your home fans’ reaction isn’t so much a statement of WV as it is of our nation.  Collectively we’ve raised a fine crop of ill-mannered, disrespectful, self-absorbed brats.  We obviously gave them too many trophies for just showing up, we instilled in the core value of “I can do whatever I want” and have taught them NOTHING about personal accountability and/or responsibility.  We’ve seen it in cities across the nation when pro teams win (or lose) and it has really started to become “the norm”.

    Great game!  Unfortunate the fans’ reaction back in WV.

    It isn’t all Jersey people….it isn’t everyone in Morgantown….it’s a bunch of liquored up knuckleheads – not rioting – but doing bone-headed traditional couch burning. Perhaps Mo’Town needs a specified couch burning site that is monitored, safe, and approved. The kids would be able to uphold the tradition but within the law. Some high schools and colleges have bonfires. Mo’Town burns couches – there’s even a Sprint commercial about it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzzHtEUu0xM .  Perhaps we need a designated Couch Conflagration Celebration.
