For the past few Christmases, Mark Showalter has rung in the holidays with a first-rate light show at his Richland, WA, home. This year, Showalter paid tribute to his alma mater of Washington State by coordinating a one-minute segment of the 30-minute show to the Cougars’ fight song.
Showalter explained in an interview with WSU News that he got the idea to implement the fight song in his light show during last year’s Apple Cup rivalry game with Washington.
It’s impressive to see the planning that goes into this spectacle, which required more than 42,000 LED lights. From a presentation and sound quality perspective, we’ll give this the nod over the Indiana Christmas lights show we highlighted last Friday.
Of course, that lights show also featured a bright, recent moment from Hoosiers athletics (Christian Watford’s buzzer-beater against Kentucky in 2011). With his Cougars coming off a 3–9 football season and not having made the Big Dance since 2008, Showalter didn’t have many highlights to choose from.
