When 14-year-old Brianna Boel was hit by a car while crossing a busy Louisville intersection on Wednesday and suffered a fractured skull, broken wrist and two broken bones in one of her legs, her father John — a news anchor with Louisville’s NBC affiliate — told her to remember the courage that Kevin Ware displayed in March after he suffered a similarly gruesome injury.
Word soon got to Ware about Brianna’s injuries. On Thursday, Ware was at her bedside at Kosair Children’s Hospital to sign her cast and cheer her up.
Overwhelmed by Ware’s simple act of kindness, John Boel posted the following to Facebook:
“In the end, we’re not measured by points or titles. It’s what we do for others in need. U of L’s Kevin Ware heard about Brianna Boel’s fractured skull, wrist and horribly broken leg after being hit in a crosswalk, and offered to come to Kosair and show her how the rods implanted into her leg will not kill her dreams. It was the first smile in 2 painful days from this 14 yr old. God Bless you Kevin!”
Ware hasn’t forgotten how much the city of Louisville rallied around him in his time of need. Now he’s finding every opportunity he can to repay them.
