They are a helmet-happy bunch in Blacksburg, VA, this season.
On Monday, the official Twitter feed for Virginia Tech’s equipment room, @VTFBEquipment, unveiled the Hokies’ third alternate helmet of 2012 following the “turkey feet” lids worn against Austin Peay on Sept. 8 and the camouflage helmets for the Sept. 22 Military Appreciation Day game against Bowling Green.
The newest addition, which will debut during Saturday’s Homecoming Game against Duke, is an all-white model that looks like a simpler version of the away lids worn in recent seasons. The “VT” with maroon lettering bordered by orange has now been reversed. In addition, the three stripes that used to run down the middle of the helmet are gone.
Perhaps the cleaner look can serve as a metaphor for a Virginia Tech team that needs to get back to basics, but the helmet is a little too boring for our taste. Grade: B-
