Heisman Trophy candidacies take on many shapes and forms. Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel, the player to beat for the stiff-armed statue, can now boast a fan-made oldies parody touting his.
YouTube user lvroper1959 posted a video of “Johnny Football,” a parody of Shelley Fabares’ “Johnny Angel,” which enjoyed a two-week run at No. 1 on the Billboard charts in 1962. While pretty creepy, the woman in the video rattles off a series of clever lyrics, such as “His team’s behind him all the way / And we’d really like to play football on New Year’s Day.”
Alas, the YouTube masses don’t seem to share our sentiment. As of 9:30 AM ET Monday, the video has 57 “likes” and 111 “dislikes,” but it does boast 21,850 views since being posted Nov. 16.
A sample comment: “Please take this down so it doesn’t hurt our Heisman chances…”
However, it hasn’t done anything to hurt Manziel’s Heisman candidacy yet. After the song was posted, he accumulated 806 total yards and 10 TDs in A&M’s last two games of the regular season.
