Vandy’s Franklin Rips Vols Commit Hurd?

[Update: Franklin has denied the tweet was about Hurd to SB Nation. Considering how out of character this seemed, Franklin deserves the benefit of the doubt.]

From the looks of it, James Franklin took to Twitter in a rather confrontational manner to express disappointment in Rivals four-star running back Jalen Hurd committing to in-state rival Tennessee over Vanderbilt (and 13 other schools) on Thursday.

While Franklin didn’t call out Hurd by name, the timing of his post suggests that it was directed at the junior from Hendersonville, TN.

We understand (if not condone) it when Franklin stirs the pot with rival coaches, such as when he referred to Alabama’s coach as “Nicky Satan.” But if this tweet was about Hurd, that’s crossing the line.

What a douche, Franklin is! To imply that Vanderbilt offers more to a kid than UT is insane. Classy Mr . Franklin. I hope all you the other kids you offered scholarships to see how you talk about them when they don’t choose you.

  • mrb3is

Showing his true colors….. Passion is one thing. Childish name-calling of a 17-year old kid for going with his instincts is not professional, or even adult, behavior.

Thank you. Go Vols!! This id the same guy that honestly thought he could make Vandy look good by presenting their record as a “really tough” SEC schedule that Vandy always falls to.

You need to fact check before you write an article smearing a coach. The FACTS are that Franklin tweeted that before Hurd announced his commitment and before Franklin knew of Hurd committing to UT. Even Hurd’s Mom said that the tweet wasn’t about her son.

    • Wiggins

Well, since you seem to know all the facts. Who was he talking about?

    • Josh T

He called urban before he committed the night before…guess who else he called…

  • http://www.facebook.com/seth.williams.7543 Seth Williams

His tweet had nothing to do with Jalen Hurd.

    • http://www.facebook.com/jake.biggers.9 Jake Biggers

      Explain…

      • http://www.facebook.com/seth.williams.7543 Seth Williams

Bruce Feldman of CBS tweeted an apology to Franklin and said that Franklin’s tweet had nothing to do with Hurd.

      • http://www.facebook.com/seth.williams.7543 Seth Williams

This is a case of people believing what they want to believe and not listening to the facts. A “don’t bother me with the facts” situation. Hurd’s mother, Bruce Feldman, Franklin, and others all say Hurd’s commitment and Franklin’s tweet had nothing to do with each other.

Look on the bright side James. At least you beat UT once. We had the worst defense in the history of UT and a Head Coach that made the ex Bama coach Shula look like a Genius. But at least you got your win. Enjoy being the Jerry Glanville of the SEC.

  • shonda

Well, he was talking about somebody-all the same. He will have many let downs as a coach along with all coaches. kind of needs to get a spine

  • ThatDude

Franklin is and always will be a complete doucher. Is anyone actually surprised?

  • http://www.facebook.com/ron.mcdaniel.16 Ron McDaniel

Franklin sounds more and more like Lame Kiffin

Hey coach Franklin, did you give your prospects a list of all the great NFL players from Vanderbilt?

  • TAMMY

Mr Framklin this is not prfessional , your behavisor very childish

  • http://www.facebook.com/jake.biggers.9 Jake Biggers

This kid wanted to play for a storied program, and help bring it back to historical significance. When has Vandy ever held any sort of significance in collage football?

  • http://www.facebook.com/seth.williams.7543 Seth Williams

So no other coach in America tries to tell people why their school is better than everyone else’s?

  • Bob Jones

41-17 enough said!! Franklin is rocking the Vol nation and they are afraid. Keep it up Coach Frnaklin.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Reece-Smith/1466880425 Reece Smith

LMFAO the Vol Nation destroyed itself with complacency and bad decisions over the past decade. All great programs go through this cycle. BTW that is over with (which is the reason Hurd chose UT). Hope you SEC nonfactors enjoyed your 15 minutes.

    • El Marko

Oh Bobby, the Tennessee Volunteers has more wins in 20 years than Vanderbilt has has in their pathetic football program! yeah, Vandy beat the vols last year. but the sun shines on a dogs butt once in awhile. so enjoy it, it won’t happen again.

if james franklin can keep backing it up on the field, then we have to take it,if not,we will remember it! nuff said!

Man! Those grapes are SOUR! LOL!

  • Olesmokey

This shows how far we had fallen, we were losing recruits to this guy. Coach Butch Jones is getting the guys that we were getting 4 to 5 years ago.

  • Todd

let’s remember this is the same guy that said he looks to see what an assistant coach’s wife looks like before he hires him. good coach and has done a great job with vandy. recruiting is tough but he’s inserted his foot in his mouth a few too many times. he is starting to remind me of a headache we still haven’t gotten over named Kiffin :-)

  • harrrysaxs26

kind a reminds you of a kiffenish attitude.

Franklin has garnered so much wonderful excitement around Nashville and Vandy football capital is at the highest levels it has been in my lifetime. The coach should be applauded and revered for giving the city and university this rising sense of pride that’s so long overdue. The city and university, with or without this recent football success, have always been and always should be thought of with piles of equity in class and honor. No entity or no one individual should be so drunk on hubris as to feel that a few stains here and there are worth winning a few football games or soiling the university and city’s good name. Coach Franklin should be wary as to not waste such valuable equity inflows with impish and envious behaviors that even dip below the utmost levels of class and honor for himself, the university and the city. Can he do it? It’s anyone’s guess at this juncture. Reports like this one and others sure make it difficult to ponder how the capital he has done such a fine job of beginning to build will eventually be spent.
