Evans Burns Buckeyes on Long TD in ’03

The hallmark of Ohio State during its 19-game winning from 2002–2003 was a defense that refused to surrender big plays. The exact kind of big play that Wisconsin’s Lee Evans burned them for in the Badgers’ 17–10 upset win in October 2003.

With backup QB Matt Schabert in the game for an injured Jim Sorgi, Evans fooled Buckeyes star CB Chris Gamble with an out-and-up route down the sideline. It was Evans’ only catch of the game, but it went for 79 yards and the game-winning touchdown with just over five minutes left.

Nine years later, another undefeated Ohio State team will visit Wisconsin’s Camp Randall Stadium this Saturday. Evans, an NFL free agent who was last a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars, will watch to see if one of his predecessors can burn the Buckeyes again. Lee Evans profile
