Gary Andersen was hired as the new Wisconsin football coach on Wednesday. But he didn’t use that as an excuse to immediately drop all ties with his former employers at Utah State.
According to Tom Mulhern of the Wisconsin State Journal, Andersen called every one of his Aggies players after news broke that he had accepted the Badgers’ job offer. Mulhern says that Andersen logged a total of 106 calls (or so) and stayed up until 2:30 AM early this morning to do so.
Considering the recent, rude departures of Todd Graham from Pitt and Tommy Tuberville from Texas Tech, it’s refreshing to hear that Andersen didn’t forget about the players he led to an 11–2 record and a victory in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl this season.
From an “upstanding citizen” perspective, Wisconsin fans have to be pinching themselves over this hire. Only time will tell if Andersen’s on-field results follow suit.
