Why have one North Carolina school with an all-white helmet when you can have two?
In the past week, both Charlotte and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill have unveiled new helmet designs with the minimalist color scheme.
The upstart 49ers program unveiled their helmets, featuring a sticker with the school’s pick axe logo, at a ceremony on July 25 overlooking soon-to-be completed McColl-Richardson Field. Charlotte football will play its inaugural season in 2013 as an FCS independent before moving to Conference USA in 2015.
“We showed several versions to our recruiting class and this white look was the overwhelming favorite,” said 49ers head coach Brad Lambert.
2.5 hours to the northeast, the Tar Heels will wear a white helmet at least once in 2012, according to Inside Carolina’s Greg Barnes.
Kudos to both teams for realizing that, sometimes, less is more. Grade: B for both
