With Kentucky and Duke meeting in Atlanta for the State Farm Champions Classic on Tuesday night, conversation surrounding the game naturally has turned to Christian Laettner’s famous, game-winning shot in the 1992 NCAA East Regional Final.
Wildcats freshman center Willie Cauley-Stein was a part of that conversation – in that he had not the slightest idea who Christian Laettner is or how he ripped the hearts out of Kentucky fans.
“I don’t even know who that is,” Cauley-Stein said in a video interview with the Louisville Courier-Journal. “It’s before me, I don’t keep up with it.”
While Cauley-Stein was born more than one year after the shot, it’s pretty inconceivable that any college player — particularly one who plays for Kentucky — doesn’t know about it. This could be some sort of Jedi mind trick courtesy of John Calipari to get his players focused on the now and only the now. History be damned.
