When a $3 million redesign of Kentucky basketball’s locker room is complete, players will literally be able to walk across a reminder of the Wildcats’ championship pedigree.
More than 3,000 square feet of the court from the 2012 Final Four in New Orleans will be installed there. According to the Lexington Herald-Leader’s Jerry Tipton, the center court logo will go in the middle of a new circular area housing players’ lockers while a free-throw lane will mark the entrance to the area.
The rest of the Final Four floor — roughly an additional 3,000 square feet — will be split into pieces and auctioned off to raise money for Kentucky-based charities.
The court was purchased by Northwestern Mutual and donated to UK with an estimated price around $100,000 to $125,000.
Naturally, coach John Calipari announced the installation at Rupp Arena with a cargo truck carrying the floor behind him. The man knows how to make the most of a moment.
