Stay In School: Top 10 College-To-NFL Coaching Bombs

While former USC coach Pete Carroll won’t be confused with Vince Lombardi, he’s done better in Seattle than he was expected to this year. But some college coaches have fallen well short of expectations when they left campus to join the professional coaching ranks. These are the ten biggest busts based not only on performance but on the expectations of each when they arrived in the NFL.

10. Dan Devine

9. Bud Wilkinson

8. Tommy Prothro

7. Rich Brooks

6. Lou Holtz

5. Dennis Erickson

4. Frank Kush

3. Dick MacPherson

2. Steve Spurrier

1. Bobby Petrino

I’m not gonna read through all of those but i trust you that they sucked it up in the NFL.

  • Adam

Great article, and thanks for calling out Bobby Petrino as the top bust. A couple of corrections to one sentence on the Petrino page are needed, however:

“…he nearly led the Cardinal to a win in the 2007 Orange Bowl.”

    1) University of Louisville sports teams are referred to as “Cardinals,” as opposed to the Stanford University “Cardinal.”

    2) He DID lead the CardinalS to a win in the 2007 Orange Bowl. Wake Forest was defeated 24-13 in U of L’s biggest bowl win since defeating Alabama in the 1991 Fiesta Bowl.

Don’t care what you say about flopping in the NFL, these guys went on with their lives, and I for one rejoice that both Lou Holtz and Bobby Petrino decided to take the offer made by Arkansas. In both eras the Razorbacks have been better for it.

  • Dave

Pete Carroll was a Pro coach who went to the college ranks then back to pro’s. I wouldn’t consider him with the rest of college to pro coaches.

  • Michael J

    Missing Bill Peterson Oilers

  • SECFan

Nick Saban should be on this list.

  • razorjoe

nick should be 1st!!!! HOW MANY TIMES DID HE SAY ON RECORD ‘
” I AM NOT INTERESTED IN THE ALABAMA JOB” THIS LIST IS A JOKE!!!

  • LJ

This list is stupid. There are a grand total of TWO coaches in the history of football that didn’t completely choke when they moved from college to the NFL: Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer (who only won because of Jimmah’s players).

  • JM

And where is John McKay? Didn’t he lose something like 20 in a row?

  • Truth

Bill Peterson only got one season, and he had some pretty terrible players. Dan Pastorini and Bill Curry, come on, those guys are losers.

  • Truth

Bill Peterson is a legend. Only mistake he made was letting Pastorini touch the field. He was/is a joke. So is Bill Curry for that matter. They both suck nuts.

  • Ed

How did we skip John McCay?

  • lb

you forgot nick satan -er- saban. talk about a bust!

  • Xavier

No Nick Saban on the list?

  • thomas182

    Steve Spurriers’ nick-name is flip-flop.
