10. Texas gets Steve Hatchell as new commissioner
The two schools got off to a rocky start at the inception of the Big 12 conference in 1996. Nebraska was in the middle of winning three of the last four national championships and rightfully believed they would wield the most power in the new Big 12 conference. But Texas had other plans, beginning with demanding that old Southwest Conference commissioner Steve Hatchell be the new Big 12 commissioner. Nebraska wanted Kansas athletic director Bob Frederick. The Longhorns got their way, setting a dangerous precedent that has irked Nebraska fans since.

This stuff is hilarious! I’m almost wondering if this whole narcissistic whine-fest was posted as a joke.

Read this, excerpted from reason no. 10, “Texas gets Steve Hatchell as new commissioner”. Emphases mine…

“Nebraska was in the middle of winning three of the last four national championships and RIGHTFULLY BELIEVED THEY WOULD WIELD THE MOST POWER in the new Big 12 conference. But Texas had other plans, beginning with demanding that old Southwest Conference commissioner Steve Hatchell be the new Big 12 commissioner. Nebraska wanted Kansas athletic director Bob Frederick. The Longhorns got their way, setting a DANGEROUS PRECEDENT that has irked Nebraska fans since.”

The gall these people have! These two emphasized points pretty much say it all. Nebraska “rightfully believed” they should have been the big fish! Things turning out the way Texas had hoped was a “dangerous precedent”. Dangerous to who? It was somehow “dangerous” that the old SWC Commish was the first Big XII Commish, implying that it wouldn’t have been dangerous if the new commish was a former Big 8 administrator. Incredible.

The Big XII has thrived as a greatly successful athletic union from the moment all the original organizational decisions were made. “Dangerous”. Great Googamooga.

Nebraska is pissed that THEY aren’t the anointed kings of the conference, getting everything THEY wanted. It’s not that some team – any team – appears to get preferential treatment due to program superiority, it’s that the team getting said treatment ISN’T THEIRS!

This is hilarious!! Maybe a bit sad, too. But certainly hilarious!

Apparently barth doesn’t get it. The Big 8 saved your SWC sorry arses from conference ruin. We wanted equal revenue sharing. Apparently, UT and OU formed a little drug deal so they would get twice the revenue of all the former Big 8 schools. The other northern schools didn’t mind because they don’t have the all around athletic program that NU has had for decades. We and UT have had the best all around athletic programs since the Big 12 was formed and yet UT gets twice the guaranteed revenue, not to mention all the state money they get. So, if Hatchell and OU had any foresight whatsoever, they would have given NU a much bigger piece of the revenue pie (I believe it was 5th place revenue the last year in the conference which is a sham given the product put on the field in all sports, including the biggest revenue producer, football). And, having a national championship football program at the forming of the Big 12 should have meant a lot more. However, like I mentioned, OU and UT cut a drug deal to somehow get twice the revenue. What does OU have to offer, especially at a time there football team was recovering from the John Blake years and they don’t have big media centers, just like Nebraska. So, educate yourself, barth, before spewing your ignorance. Now, that’s hilarious.
