CFB’s Top 10 Biggest Program Scandals

The college football world is buzzing about the NCAA’s sanctions against USC that will keep the Trojans out of the next two bowl seasons. But in the history of college football, where exactly does the Reggie Bush saga rank in the biggest program scandals of all time? We have the Top 10 that would make Wall Street executives blush.

Editor’s Note: These are program scandals, hence the Mike Price strip club and George O’Leary resume scandals are not included.

10. Eric Ramsey’s Dirty Tapes Topple Auburn in ‘93.

Some shaaaaaady programs. Would love to see RichRod on this list.

  2. prman says:

Bullet proof vest for graduation? You’d think that with the tens of tens of students that actually finish their degree at Miami, anyone with a gun would be easy to spot.

  3. JA says:

Who the hell is Andrew Sorensen? You mean Logan Young? He wont be helping Cleveleand get LeBron to stay anytime soon because HE’S DEAD YOU IDIOT!!

  4. JA says:

Andrew Sorensen is the former President of The University of Alabama

  5. Brian LB-U says:

I don’t have a dog in this fight, but how is Alabama’s situation rated worse than USC’s? I read the NCAA’s official USC release and it is clear Reggie Bush’s “agent” had direct discussions with Todd McNair (a man more widely know for having been convicted not once but twice on animal cruelty charges after he was busted for running a dog fighting operation) where the still employed coach blatantly lied to NCAA investigators and covered up the problem. Does anybody believe that, upon receiving the documented, threatening phone call from Bush’s agent where he threatened to “blow up” the entire program if Bush didn’t “pay up”, USC coach Todd McNair didn’t immediately report the issue to Pete Carroll and/or Mike Garrett?? Of course not. USC knew about this at the highest levels, and they flat-out lied about it (and continue to lie).

  6. PutSpur2Fur says:

I can’t believe Charlie Pell didn’t make a Two-Fer appearance on your list. Charlie honed his craft at Clemson before perfecting it at Florida.

Of course Danny Ford took over at Clemson when Charlie left, but he kept the cars and cash flowing until Clemson bought themselves the 1981 MNC.

Still, Clemson’s resulting NCAA punishment was the harshest ever until SMU was shut down.

  7. Anonymous says:

Why isn’t Danny Ford and Clemson on your list?

  8. DawgVent says:

Because Clemson’s infractions did not result in any players on the field and a two-year probation from the NCAA pales in comparison to everything on this list.

Had they gotten Herschel, they would have probably made it.

  9. Anonymous says:

DawgVent, how can you say Clemson’s infractions did not result in any players on the field? Remember a little guy that was called “The Fridge”? When he left school for the NFL he said he was going to have to take a pay cut. There were many players from their 81 bought championship that were payed handsomely……

wait a minute your a georgia fan talking about other schools having been paid off were do you think clemson football team knew how to cheat they listend to georgia

  10. Joe says:

    Where is FSU????????

  11. jim joyce says:

Scandals??? I ve never been involved in a scandal.

  12. Joe says:

Bama’s is much worse. It landed at least one person in Federal prison, though he never made it. Some people still think there was foul play in Young’s death. UA also lied to the NCAA throughout the process, and they still have the same AD (the one who had numerous texts, phone calls etc with Young during the Means recruitment). Most people at Bama still neglect to admit any wrongdoing. Instead, they point fingers at Phil Fulmer and UT for “ratting them out”.

  13. bigdaddy says:

Authored by a PAC10 fan? USC/Bush #9. Really? Have you any idea the $’s that exchanged hands in SoCal? Come on…be realistic if you’re going to post this stuff.

  14. Inert1 says:

The SEC and Big 12/SWC brand of corruption is very different from the Pac 10 brand. The loan to Billy Joe Hobert was from a golfing buddy who had no affiliation with the UW, and there were no resulting sanctions. (The sanctions were due to jobs that weren’t completely legit, which can be said of most jobs, and the sanctions were from the Pac 10, not the NCAA. Boosters–or even coaches–paying guys to come and play for them is much more serious, even if the dollar amounts are smaller.

  15. jackhole3 says:

Where are the Texas A&M infractions from the early 1990s that got Jackie Sherrill fired, resulted in a booster going to jail thanks to an FBI investigation, and showed the NCAA is only interested in shutting down insignificant football programs much to A&M’s, ‘Bama’s, and OU’s relief?

  16. LadyNole says:

I don’t remember any bowl bans for Bobby Bowden. How could losing a few scholarships compare to bowl bans!

  17. N.Az.Dawg says:

jackhole3, SMU wasn’t insignificant at all. They almost won the national championship twice in the early 80s, and were still a power when the sanctions came down. They certainly were a more powerful program than Texas A&M at the time.

  18. USC78 says:

How in the hell do you leave Clemson out of this list. With the help of Charlie Pell as head coach (prior to his escape to Florida), and subsequently with the cheater he mentored, Danny Ford, Clemson rung up 69 charges and 150 NCAA violations and in 1982, was placed on probation by the NCAA for two years, with the ACC tacking on one additional year. If anyone deserved to be stripped of their (1981) national championship, it is Clemsux!

UF’s 107 violations is astounding. They forget the same big money boosters are still involved.
