Top 10 Best Dressed College Basketball Coaches

Dressing well may not help coaches with X’s and O’s, but a coach who looks good can give off an extra air of confidence – something you’ll never sense when you see Tommy Amaker wear his trademark mock sweater. These are the ten best-dressed coaches in the country.

10. Ben Howland (UCLA)
Howland may not strike you as especially well-dressed because he’s not flashy but trust us, Howland gets it done on the runway. He tends to wear the three-button suit, more modern than the two-button variety your father wore in the ’80s and ’90s. He might bust out the pinstripes once in a while but Howland generally sticks with solid black or dark blue and rotates between blue and white shirts with light-colored ties. He may not have a color blazer for special occasions but it’s no surprise his ties are more often than not gold.

9. Trent Johnson (LSU)
His team may not look good but no worries: Johnson always looks sharp on the sidelines. Johnson’s wardrobe got a little flashier when he moved from Stanford to LSU, possibly because of the giant paycheck involved in the move. He rocks the pinstripes more and while he isn’t always sporting a purple tie, the ones he does put on are sharp without being too obvious. Unfortunately, his attire hasn’t been able to distract LSU fans from seeing the product on the court; the Tigers had lost 10 straight before a win last night.

8. Ron Hunter (IUPUI)
Hunter likes the three-piece outfits minus the jacket and tie but we think he pulls off the standard suit and tie look incredibly well. Just check out that combination in the picture below. We’re not exactly sure why he’s so emotional in that picture, but that’s what we’d look like if we found a suit that looked that good on us.

7. Rick Barnes (Texas)
Like Howland, Barnes pulls off the simple very well. You’re not going to see him outside of a black suit/white shirt comb often. But we found this picture from last year’s Big 12 quarterfinals and, you know what, Barnes looks pretty good. Is he coaching a basketball game or headed to brunch? Most coaches would rather loosen their ties than not go with a tie at all but Barnes proves here that this is a look that could work very well.

6. Rick Pitino (Louisville)
Two words: pocket square. Honestly, what coach can pull off the pocket square on a consistent basis? Only Pitino. Some other coaches may have one for a game or two, but Pitino loves rocking it on a nightly basis and we feel like the pocket square is a level of fashion synonymous with a cane or monocle. Let’s just hope he keeps the ridiculous all-white suit in the closet.
