Theismann: Newton Isn’t First-Rounder

You can try and silence him but Joe Theismann will do just about anything to stay in the news, including his latest bold proclamation: Not only does he think Cam Newton shouldn’t be the first overall pick, Theismann says Newton shouldn’t even be a first-round pick.

Speaking to an ESPN Radio affiliate in Washington D.C., Theismann said he was worried about Newton’s ability to throw the ball after he spent much of his time at Auburn using his legs, and his recent televised interview with Jon Gruden that didn’t impress.

OK, that’s criticism we’ve heard before, but Newton not worthy of being among the top 32 picks on Thursday? That seems to be overstating it quite a bit.

A star at Notre Dame and with the Washington Redskins, Theismann hasn’t experienced as much success in the broadcast booth recently. Theismann returned to the booth last season on the NFL Network after leaving ESPN. It has been reported he will not be invited back for another season. Joe Theismann profile

    I love you…you are so funny..”tomfoolery.”

Theisman is a man on a mission. He’s about to lose his Sunday NFL job to Mayock…Knowing that the elite media are all rooting for Blaine, especially those at NFLN, him commenting negatively on Cam to keep himself relevant can’t hurt.

The constant “who can criticize Cam the worst” stuff being done by the elite sports media is off the chart ridiculous.

As Obama called the media yesterday and can aptly be attached to the elite sports media in regards to Cam…They are a bunch of “Carnival Barkers.”

Theismann’s only a fan of himself so of course he’s not high on another QB. Having said that, I too believe Newton is a 2nd rounder at best because of his athletic – not quarterback – skills. But just like Joe Theismann, no one cares about my opinion either!!!

  • Kevin

I am not a fan of Theismann or a hater of Theismann, but I value his opinion on NFL quarterbacks simply because he was a successful NFL quarterback. I wouldn’t want to ask my mechanic about my plumbing, so why would I listen to anyone’s view on Cam who had not walked the walk???

I dont really care about Theismann his career or Mayock. What I do care about is an honest sincere evaluation of a players ability. I too scout players, and I have to agree with this assessment. Cam Newton is TO!! big a of a risk to be a first round player much less the first over all player chosen. Id rather take a chance on a Ryan Mallet (Considering they trade that far down) Hell I think Kapernick has more upside then Newton Personally.

      You fool!

    I’m with you fellers!

Never cared for good ole Joe. The only quarterback named Joe that I ever liked was from the NY JETS…Joe Willie Namath. He had it all. Frankly, he was simply the best. Noone has ever matched his play in my lifetime.
Here’s was a guy who could party all night and still show up for work and play the game like no other.

Kevin I agree , and not having been a NFL. QB. I will take what Joe says before some hero worshipping sports writer. The heisman doesn’t mean much anymore as a gauge of QB. talent, but more a beauty pageant So go a head Joe call it like you see it.

  • cam is a democrat, brain dead

everyone knows once you go democrat you areant allowed back. if anyone say that jon gruden film where he is interviewing CAM. you know he is a moron. and no one in there right mind would want that big of an idiot at QB.

  • Robert H.

I agree with Joe. D lineman in the NFL are salivating right now for the chance to knock that smile off his face. Tebow or Pryor have better chance at a NFL career.

  • beagamer

Although I wasn’t a huge Joe fan when he was under center, I am a fan of his in the booth because he says it the way it is and this is no different. If I were a Gm I’d be listening.

  • Chris D

I hope Cam Newton takes all this negative feedback in and uses it to become the best QB he can be. The young man is a winner. He has more physical tools than Joe T ever dreamed of having. Instead of hating on the young man, pass on some veteran knowledge.

  • Theismann is STOOPID

“everyone knows once you go democrat you areant allowed back. if anyone say that jon gruden film where he is interviewing CAM. you know he is a moron. and no one in there right mind would want that big of an idiot at QB.”

Believe it or not, the author of the paragraph above actually called someone else an idiot…

  • Sour Grapes

Seems like he’s trying to protect another Notre Dame QB that couldn’t cut the mustard, Jimmy Clausen. Maybbe his true color is starting to show, hence him falling so far out of the broadcast booth. If Cam Newton doesn’t pan out, it’ll just be another QB in a long line that didn’t. Evidently, it isn’t an easy position to play or every team would have a good QB. Let the kid play the game first before you judge him.
