The great thing about rivalry games is that team rankings going into the game go out the window. Whoever emerges from those games victorious has something more potent than an improved ranking: Bragging rights.
Such was the case with the 1990 installment of the Red River Rivalry. Oklahoma entered the game 5–0 and ranked No. 4. But when placekicker R.D. Lashar’s last-second field goal attempt from 46 yards out went wide left, unranked Texas had itself a 14–13 victory over its biggest rival.
Lashar, who as of October 2008 was working for Oklahoma’s Department of Health and Human Services, no doubt hopes that current Sooners placekicker Mike Hunnicutt can have more success if faced with a situation this Saturday in the Cotton Bowl. R.D. Lashar profile
