When describing Steve Spurrier’s first win at Florida Field as an opposing coach, Brad Nessler said the following at the end of the ESPN telecast in 2010: “He’s been carried off this field before in different colors.”
Nessler was referring to the orange and blue that Spurrier sported as a coach of the Gators. Now, he was wearing the garnet and black of South Carolina, whose 36–14 win over Florida sent the Gamecocks to their first ever SEC Championship Game.
The Head Ball Coach’s victories when he was in Gainesville normally came courtesy of his “Fun ‘n Gun” offense. This game was the polar opposite. South Carolina road the coattails of star freshman running back Marcus Lattimore, who rumbled for 212 yards and three touchdowns on 40 carries.
Spurrier and Lattimore will be back in The Swamp this Saturday. And with both the Gamecocks (No. 9) and Gators (No. 3) ranked in the AP Top 10, the stakes are even higher than they were two years ago.
