Southern Miss Blunders Chant Apology

Southern Miss president Martha Saunders has already apologized for Golden Eagle students chanting “Where’s your Green Card?!” at Kansas State’s Angel Rodriguez on Thursday during K-State’s 70-64 win.

The only problem? She misspelled his name.

The formal statement read:

“We deeply regret the remarks made by a few students at today’s game. The words of these individuals do not represent the sentiments of our pep band, athletic department or university. We apologize to Mr. Rodriquez and will take quick and appropriate disciplinary action against the students involved in this isolated incident.”

Rodriquez? We’re not aware of an Angel Rodriquez, but it’s nice they apologized to him. Now they just need to apologize to the player Southern Miss fans showered with a racist chant.

Really? A spelling mistake? Is that the best you can do?

    • Anonymous

An educator spelling a word wrong is a VERYBIG deal.

are you liberals ALWAYS looking to call someone racist?

  • ojosclaros54

These kids shoud be sent, not only to a cultural sensitivity workshop, but to a history class…Puertoricans are born american citizens and don’t need a green card to be in the U.S.A. !!!!! By the way, they are american citizens and do not have the right to vote for the president, but serve in the armed forces. How do you like them apples?

Pie in the face! Have them take a whole semester of History of Puerto Rico!!!

Wow – complaining about a typo with a “q” rather than a “g”. I’m sure all of your work is perfect everytime! Give them credit for quickly responding and apologizing and drop the “holier than thou” act.

  • Dan

A typo doesn’t make the apology “dubious” — just careless. It sounds sincere to me, and its sincerity isn’t diminished by a common spelling error.

  • Jenny

Don’t you think you’d make sure that you’d a name correctly when you are apologizing to THAT person? What the statement shows is that there was careless thought put into the apology. If you don’t put any effort into your apology, is it even worth anything?

She’s a university President – how is that acceptable?! Think about if someone personally insulted you and then apologized and called you by the wrong name. You’d still feel insulted – wouldn’t you. Yeah, you know you would.

  • Jenny

The students’ behavior was extremely foolish, and it was embarrassing for the university. As far as the “misspelling” goes, if you click on the blue “Southern Miss” link under the article, it takes you to the school’s website and Martha Saunders’ statement. It appears that Mr. Rodriguez’s name is spelled correctly. If it had been spelled wrong, though, people should just accept that she was trying to offer an apology.

I’m a Southern Miss supporter and I think our officials making an apology to the K-State folks was appropriate. But this incident is being blown way out of proportion. It was college kids acting like college kids and the band director stopped them like he should have. Rodriguez played a great game (especially in the last few minutes) and was a big factor in K-State’s victory, so he got the last laugh. If you’ve ever played any competitve sports you have to deal with people in the stands trying to get inside your head as well as your opponents, so I salute Rodriguez for dealing with it and helping his team win the game.

  • Mike

It’s Southern Miss. Are you surprised?

PEOPLE…WE PORTORICAN ARE UNITED STATES CITIZENS SINCE 1917….DUHHHH..

    • gg

Portorican? Better not say anything about spelling. Chant was very inappropriate.

    • Bob

I’m sure the 18 and 19 year old kids at So Miss knew he was from Puerto Rico. You politically correct idiots need to get a life.
