It appears the luck of the Irish has rubbed off on ESPN sideline reporter Samantha Ponder (née Steele).
During Saturday’s media day before the BCS title game between Notre Dame and Alabama on Monday in Miami, the Irish football players struggled for approximately 11 minutes to complete “Trick Shot Monday” – the team’s tradition of shooting a ping pong ball into a water cup with a trick shot.
That’s when Ponder stepped up and bounced the ball off a wood plank and into a water cup that was resting right in front of the BCS crystal ball trophy. Ponder was subsequently lifted into the air by the players in a jubilant celebration.
Said Ponder afterward: “I knew that you guys were struggling and were in your time of need. In the fourth quarter, that’s when I show up. The game was on the line, we’re running out of time, and I decided to save the day.”
Needless to say, Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly is hoping for a similar celebration tomorrow night.
