Iowa State’s Paul Rhoads is already on our short list for the coolest head football coaches in the country. He’s delivered rousing postgame speeches that have gone viral on YouTube, sported a respectable Fu Manchu mustache and gotten a shout-out from President Barack Obama.
It’s a reputation that Rhoads upheld on Tuesday afternoon, when he spent 45 minutes walking the halls of the Wallace Hall dormitory greeting incoming freshman and giving them pieces of candy.
“They’re not anticipating it,” Rhoads told The Des Moines Register. “Nobody’s telling them I’m coming through. I just go barge in their room while they’re unpacking and offer them a Snickers or a Reese’s. … I like to see the expression on their faces. About nine of 10 already have season tickets, and that excites me.”
Some of the freshmen were pleasantly surprised at Rhoads’ appearance in their rooms. Others were just confused as to who the man handing them candy out of a bucket was.
“I had to introduce myself to a few,” Rhoads said.
Call us crazy, but we can’t picture Alabama’s Nick Saban doing this.
