Gene Keady would be proud.
With 8:08 remaining in the second half and his team down to Illinois, 64-46, on Wednesday night, Purdue head coach Matt Painter had enough.
Following an extended outburst, Painter was hit with a pair of technical fouls and ejected from the game. However, he wasn’t going to leave until the referees truly knew how he felt.
Painter was escorted out by police, but perhaps his fury should have been directed at his team:
“You get to that certain point, you want your team to play harder, you want your team to embrace the physicality of the game,” Painter said. “And they weren’t.”
Purdue went on to lose the game 79-59, its first loss to Illinois in their last nine contests.
We’re guessing the Purdue locker room wasn’t a fun place to be when the Boilermaker players walked in to their waiting head coach.
