What is it about college sports that lends itself to ridiculous wedding cakes?
Former Ohio State walk-on (now writer) Mark Titus had a groom’s cake of wrestler Shawn Michaels drop-kicking Larry Bird. The wedding of a Texas fan to an Oklahoma fan over Memorial Day weekend was commemorated with a Cotton Bowl cake. The cake at Bret Bielema’s wedding in March had roses wrapped around each tier.
And now an intrepid Penn State fan is celebrating their upcoming nuptials with a groom’s cake resembling the late Joe Paterno.
While we applaud the attention to detail — JoePa’s shades, the Nittany Lion logo, even a Nike swoosh on the jacket — it just comes across as creepy. Why would you want your groom’s cake to look like a cemetery memorial?
It was also pretty bad timing since the rehearsal dinner at which the cake was displayed reportedly took place last Friday, one day after the Freeh Report further tarnished JoePa’s legacy.
No word on whether a “do-gooder” group commissioned a plane to fly over the site of the wedding rehearsal with a sign like this.
