The 2010 college football season is hours away from ending and already people are starting to ask about the favorites for the 2011 season. So we decided to break out our crystal ball for our inaugural preseason 2011 power rankings based on the early departures so far to the NFL and who else we expect to leave campus. Who do we see playing in the Big Easy for next year’s national title? Let’s just say we expect the two schools to paint the town red.
| 2011 Power Rankings | ||||
| RK | TEAM | Current BCS Rank | COMMENT | |
![]() |
1 | Stanford | 4 | Jim Harbaugh is gone but Stanford returns almost the entire defense plus, oh yeah, Heisman favorite Andrew Luck. Even without a head coach right now, this is the team to beat. Talk about a dream job. |
![]() |
2 | Oklahoma | 7 | Is this the year Stoops finally gets another national title? The offense is absolutely loaded and the Sooners finished the season on a tear. Ryan Broyles coming back to Norman was huge. |
![]() |
3 | Ohio State | 6 | If the “Tat Five” returns, a national title is possible if the good Terrelle Pryor shows up next year. The defense loses lots of experience but always has ample replacements. |

4 | LSU | 11 | Did you happen to catch the Cotton Bowl where the Tigers blew Texas A&M out of the water? LSU brings a ton back and Les Miles always pulls two games out of his hat he has no business winning – that is, if he sticks around. |

5 | Oregon | 2 | A ton of players graduate but with QB Darron Thomas and RB LaMichael James back, expect the Ducks to still destroy scoreboards. |
![]() |
6 | South Carolina | 20 | QB Stephen Garcia, RB Marcus Lattimore and WR Alshon Jeffery are an incredible nucleus but the Gamecocks are a Jekyll and Hyde team. |
![]() |
7 | Boise State | 10 | QB Kellen Moore and coach Chris Petersen are back. ‘Nuff said. But the Mountain West will be tougher than the WAC. |
![]() |
8 | Alabama | 16 | Practically this whole team is headed to the NFL except one person: Nick Saban. At Alabama, they don’t rebuild, they reload. |
![]() |
9 | Michigan State | 9 | Despite a humiliating end to the season, Sparty is stacked and gets Ohio State without Terrelle Pryor. |
![]() |
10 | Auburn | 1 | Auburn’s quarterback situation is extremely dicey with Newton certainly going pro, but there’s a lot of young talent at the skill positions. Chizik’s D will need to give Gus Malzahn’s O lots more help. |
![]() |
11 | Nebraska | 18 | Lots of talent but lots of question marks. What happened at the end of the season? Will Jared Crick return? What is to be expected from QB Taylor Martinez? The “Legends” division is weak. |
![]() |
12 | Florida State | 23 | QB E.J. Manuel looks like the real deal and the defense has a chance to look like it did during the glory years in the 1990s. |
![]() |
13 | Oklahoma State | 14 | With OC Dana Holgorsen off to West Virginia and Justin Blackmon likely headed to the NFL, the offense loses its two best weapons. With almost everyone else back, they’ll be fine. |
![]() |
14 | Mississippi State | 21 | Cam who? QB Chris Relf finished the year on fire and MSU gets LSU, South Carolina and Alabama at home. Time for more cowbell. |
![]() |
15 | Wisconsin | 5 | The Badgers lose a ton of players on both sides but with Montee Ball and James White still in the backfield, they’ll still trample over many opponents. |
![]() |
16 | NC State | NR | QB Russell Wilson is a Heisman dark horse and the team returns almost everyone except its WRs. Of course, if Wilson picks baseball over football, all bets are off. |
![]() |
17 | Notre Dame | NR | TE Kyle Rudolph is gone and WR Michael Floyd will probably soon follow, but Brian Kelly has things pointed in the right direction. |
![]() |
18 | Missouri | 12 | Losing QB Blaine Gabbert to the NFL was a huge blow to a team that could have won the Big 12, but there’s still a lot of offensive weapons. |
![]() |
19 | Texas A&M | 17 | The Aggies’ offense should be deadly next season but what in the world happened against LSU? |
![]() |
20 | UCF | 25 | George O’Leary is a defensive mastermind and the return of RB Brynn Harvey is huge. It’s only a matter of time until a BCS school gives O’Leary another chance. |
