Plane Issues Ultimatum for JoePa Statue

Apparently, renaming the area outside Beaver Stadium where students camp out for prime football tickets — from “Paternoville” to “Nittanyville”— isn’t nearly enough for some people.

Several people on the ground spotted a plane flying over State College on Tuesday and attached to it was a banner expressing outrage over a (as of now) still-standing statue of Joe Paterno outside the stadium.

The banner read, “Take the Statue Down or We Will.”

Whoever commissioned the flyover has a valid point for wanting to take the statue down, as the recent Freeh Report listed Paterno — among other higher-ups at Penn State — as one of the figures who allowed Jerry Sandusky to continue with his monstrous activities.

But using a perceived threat of terror and maliciousness to get your point across? There’s been too much ugliness to the Penn State scandal already.

A “look at me” message like this only adds to that.

This is not a threat of terror. This is just a warm up to total destruction.

  • Common Sense

Probably should take down the statue because as long as it’s standing it will invite the crazies ( like the ones who set up this plane).. to make threats and perhaps cause damages to occur. Those who have revered Joe for so many years ..can continue to do so in their own way. Also..Joe himself would surely not want his statue to be the focus of so many negative comments and actions.

  • Penn State Statue Ultimatum

Of course this banner is inappropriate… But so is leaving the statue is a defiant jesture by Penn State officials. Perhaps it would be better to vacate all the wins associated with Sandusky… including the 2 national championship runs?
Personally, I just want REAL evidence that Penn State’s community has changed and I feel this is paramount to a lot of other people. What is going to happen of substance that means this will not be tolerated? Yes I want to feel that Penn State feels remorse that this has happened at their university. But what is there to assure me that it will not be repeated with the next all powerful footbal coach and his associates who represents huge money to the university.

Outsiders have no say in the statue but feel they are above the law and can do as they please.. So the students and JoePa fans better be ready to defend that statue.

The statue will only continue to provide a reminder of the pain that has been brought upon the victims and the shame that individuals have brought upon a great university. Whatever one feels for Paterno, they can keep those feelings to themselves. No names on the jerseys, no need for a statue.

R u kidding me? Outsiders have no say in the statue remaining or leaving? Penn State officials obvious don’t get it! You need the outsiders to help save the skewed view of most the Nittanyville folks! Paterno committed the 2nd most hanious crime at the school! Supporting someone with zero concern for the victims adds all you Paterno lovers to the watch list! Stand up and do what’s right!

our lives are lead by the media — wish they’d just be quiet to stop the unstable individuals. people forget all the good Paterno did to help youth. Another quesion is why isn’t the state of Penna at fault afterall they knew and failed to press charges– let’s see the current governor was the DA — where’s his penalty?
Why is a school, it’s alumni, and future students, and local businesses being destroyed due to the errors of the administrators. think about it – the school will have more money to pay victims and not for profit groups – plus send a message. If the football program is dropped then all other sports should be stopped afterall it was the president and administrators.

Step away from your love of PSU. Think about what happened. Coach Paterno did many great things. Admired by all who were associated with PSU. Admired by foes on the gridiron. Gave more than he got. What Coach Paterno did for his University can’t be forgotten. Glad to see him against Bama this year in Happy Valley. If he truly knew what was going on as the Freeh reports indicate the statue has to come down. Hard to ever know,he is gone. Very saddening even for the rest of college football fans. What we are talking about here is children. Ask yourself,”What if he were mine.” Would you really care about a statue?
Our children are our most prized possessions. Sandusky didn’t abuse he raped young boys. Think about it.

  • psu fan

who did the crime here? It’s all about Joe being condemened, It seems like Joe was the criminal convicted and not Sandusky.

It’s simple. The statue should be taken down. As great a coach as Paterno may have been he forever tarnished his legacy by allowing a child molester to continue molesting children. If we allow the statue to stand we send the message that sports figures are above recrimination. Is that really the message we want to send to our children?

  • Fritz Valme

The man stood idly by while another man continued to molest children. I wonder if the same argument would hold water if that was your son, brother, cousin or nephew who w as molested.

I believe the entire university park community is guilty of “looking the other way”. How can all the people there be unaware of “rumors”. They ignored it due to potential loss of revenue from the football season. If the university is truly remorseful, either donate a fair amount of earnings for molested children or educating parents and communities about the subject, or voluntarily give up one football season to focus on the subject.

  • Joey P

I can’t believe people want to keep the statue up. The man helped children to be molested.
