Bruins football fans accustomed to seeing UCLA take the field at the Rose Bowl wearing their unique powder blue jerseys with gold numbers will have to adjust their eyes at Saturday’s Homecoming Game against Arizona.
Team outfitter adidas is calling the look “L.A. Nights.” The helmet, jerseys and pants are all dark blue. The numbers on the jersey are UCLA’s traditional light blue and are outlined in gold. In addition, the shoulders include the alternating light blue-gold-light blue stripe pattern seen on the Bruins’ away jerseys.
UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero explained the uniform choice on his weekly blog Tuesday.
“As a Bruin for life, I strongly value UCLA’s traditions, but alternate uniforms in non-traditional colors represent a 21st century trend that, when done tastefully, synchronizes the familiar with the fresh.”
We think that the Bruins’ new look lives up to that ideal. Now all they need to do is not stink up the joint like they did when they wore alternate unis against USC last year and proceeded to lose, 50–0. Grade: B+
