Monday was Marcus Lattimore’s 21st birthday, but the South Carolina star’s knee injury two days prior didn’t lend itself to a celebration. Or so Lattimore thought.
South Carolina governor Nikki Haley declared Oct. 29 as “Marcus Lattimore Day,” and a rally held on the school’s Columbia campus drew between 2,000 and 3,000 people.
“[My husband] Michael and I ask every South Carolinian to join our family as we lift up in prayer Marcus Lattimore and his mother Yolanda Smith during this challenging time,” Haley said. “He has been more than just a Carolina football player, he is a great role model for our state.”
Steve Spurrier also spoke at the rally, saying, “This is not a memorial service. This is a happy birthday to Marcus and an appreciation for everything he’s done and is going to continue to do for South Carolina.”
Rehabilitating an injury is an emotional process as well as a physical one. It’s touching to see that Lattimore is getting everything he needs when it comes to the former.
