Volunteers fans first took to Tennessee’s Rock in mid-October to call for Derek Dooley’s job. They are continuing to do so, only now they’re implementing a previously used, derisive nickname for the zany coach.
Splashed on The Rock is the coach’s likeness and next to it the name “Derek Doolander.” Instead of his normal close-cropped hair, Dooley’s ‘do is blown out to resemble that of Ben Stiller’s title character in Zoolander. A designer bandana adds to the effect.
Also adding to the effect? The caption below the nickname: “Center for Coaches Who Can’t Coach Good,” a reference to the movie’s “Derek Zoolander Center for Kids Who Can’t Read Good and Wanna Learn to Do Other Stuff Good Too.”
And just as Derek Zoolander is tormented by blonde rival Hansel in the movie, Dooley is now tormented by people who want to see a blonde contemporary (Jon Gruden) take his place. It’s hilarious how life can imitate art sometimes.
