In the two years since he became Oklahoma State’s offensive coordinator, Todd Monken has never shied away from a sound byte. His latest gem came in advance of Saturday’s “Bedlam Series” game against Oklahoma, when Monken revealed he’s not a fan of the state’s nickname.
“The bottom line is we live in the Sooner State, and that alone pisses you off,” he said. “That pisses you off, because you want to be that team. And the reality is you have to listen to it year-round how great it is down there.
“We share the same space … And you don’t want to share it. I know they don’t want to share it. They don’t want to hear about Oklahoma State, and I sure as hell don’t want to hear about them.”
Monken’s comments weren’t so much expressing disdain for the Sooners as much as it expressed a little envy and desire to be the state’s top team. He’ll get his chance to earn his second win in as many tries against Oklahoma in Norman on Saturday.
