Rice Owls Band Makes ‘$EC’ Formation

[Editor's Note: This article has been updated after receiving more information about the performance.]

The Rice Owls band known as the “MOB” (Marching Owls Band) is known for its crazy antics like in 2007, when it mocked the legal troubles of Texas players by doing a “Dragnet” theme in Austin.

And they really outdid themselves Saturday night when Rice played against the Longhorns again. While performing on the field, the band formed the word “$EC” with a dollar sign for the “S” in reference to the fact Texas A&M is attempting to leave the Big 12 for the Southeastern Conference.

While most people have been critical of Texas for driving members out of the conference with things such as the Longhorn Network, the folks in Austin certainly appreciated a shot at the arch-rival Aggies for pursuing more money in another league.

Hey there, I’m the script coordinator for the MOB. And… Nope. That’s not what we did at all. Purely an Aggie dig. Hopefully, you’ll note that we also put Satan on the field handing a ticket to the SEC to someone in an A and M uniform, and the fact that we made a joke about Aggies being a tad dull at the end. We like playing for you guys way too much to have nefarious motives like the ones implied here.

You missed the point, but unless you saw the Friday night MOB interview on the Longhorn Network, you don’t get it. You know the MOB hasn’t been allowed back to College Station in years. Not since they strategically placed member of the band in various locations with whistles to confuse the Aggie Band. The were all running into each other (ala Animal House) — You had to be there. Last night they got raoring approval from the Longhorn fans. And there was a mock Aggie fight song played – so yeah, that.

THE MAIN REASON THE “MOB” HASN’T BEEN ALLOWED IN COLLEGE STATION IN YEARS IS BECAUSE RICE & TAMU HAVE NOT BEEN IN THE SAME CONFERENCE SINCE 1997. IT’S A SHAME THE “MOB” DOES NOT HAVE TALENT SO THEIR PERFORMANCES ARE TO RIDICULE THEIR OPPONENT OR SOMEONE ELSE. I HAVE A SUGGESTION FOR THE MOB FOR THE NEXT TIME THEY PLAY “tu”.

“$300,OOO,000″ AS IN THE TWENTY YEAR CONTRACT THEY HAVE w/ ESPN FOR SPORTS PROGRAMING. THAT IS THE CAUSE OF THE DISRUPTIONS IN THE BIG 12, & TAMU’S DEPARTURE PROBABLY WON’T BE THE LAST! I THINK THERE ARE OTHER BIG 12 UNIVERSITIES THAT ARE NOT HAPPY w/ HOW “tu” IS GOING THEIR SEPARATE WAY, & THE REST OF THE CONFERENCE BE DAMNED.

My understanding from several reports is that a&m was approched by texas 4 years ago to form a joint network between the 2 schools and a&m declined. the aggies later came back a year ago wanting in and it was to late so it pissed them off and using that as their excuse to leave. a&m is leaving because they can’t stand texas and they are tired of feeling 2nd class (which if the aggs would quit worrying about others instead of themselves, maybe they wouldn’t feel like orphans). LHN has nothing to do with this but it sure is nice to have a scapegoat so bravo for the aggs trying to pull that off so they don’t look like complete idiots (which hasn’t helped that much).

Sorry, the whistle story is untrue.

I was in the MOB ’81-’85 and particpated in the return to Kyle Field.

I was on the sideline EXACTLY where a squad of Aggie Band seniors missed their countermarch and screwed up the block T. Having been in corps-style and military-style bands in high school, I knew the mistake when I saw it. No whistles involved.

Well apparently you need to get facts straight before posting a “false” story on your blog site. According to all other news wires, the Rice band was taking a shot at a&m and not Texas. Soooooo saying that, it’s obvious that this is not a reputable website. LOL. It only keeps getting Bette for longhorn fan. Hook ‘em!!!!!!!

As the other script coordinator for the MOB, I will clarify what Scott says and let you know that the segment that picture is from was meant as a jab at Texas A&M.

  • Sooooie!!

Getting better for Texas? in a few years when they are getting thier horns knocked off and dont have thier easy Iowa states, and Rices to beat up on then theyll have to concentrate on thier band instead of football to make thier statements also! SEC!!! can u say CHA-CHING!!! 5 national titles..in a row? spell that out with yur band!

I was at the Texas/Rice game, and as a Texas fan we thought thr MOB was hilarious. Indeed we have an appreciation for the cleverness that the MOB shows every year. We have been watching them for years and always appreciate that the skits they perform, are highly entertaining, even when aimed at Texas it is all in good fun. The aggies ar notorious having no sense of humor and for physical confrontations when they get their feelings hurt. (Ask the SMU cheerleaders and the UT service fraternity that runs the Texas Flag who has swords pulled on them by aggies)
Oh-Well they are no longer our problem, the $EC can deal with the wierdness. So to the aggies: So long, farewell, auweideschoen, BU-BYE!

Is it really a”dig” when it does nothing at all to negatively impact A&M? No one at A&M cares about your intended dig. The Aggies are making their own way and looking out for their best interests. Certainly the Longhorns can understand that (LHN).
