Maryland’s Opener Uniforms Steal Show

While Maryland’s season opener on Monday night vs. Miami (FL) was billed as a great early-season match-up between two ACC rivals, the real story of the game was the uniforms the Terrapins ran onto the field wearing.

The Terps had already raised eyebrows a couple weeks ago when they unleashed a plethora of new outrageous designs that included a turtle-shell helmet with Under Armour that had them looking like the Oregon of the East, but Monday night’s never-before-seen uniforms put all of them to shame.

Maryland had an asymmetrical look with each side of its helmet and the sleeves displaying the two parts of the Maryland state flag: A gold and black checkerboard-like design (the coat of arms of state “founder” George Calvert) and a red and white cross bottony (the coat of arms of the Crossland family, the family of Calvert’s mother).

The unis blew up Twitter and sparked commentary from everyone from ESPN college basketball analyst Jay Bilas to LeBron James.

Tweeted Bilas: “The 1970′s Houston Astros have just released a statement that they would not be caught dead in the new Maryland football uniforms.”

Tweeted James: OH GOSH! Maryland uniforms #Ewwwwww!”

We’re resigned ourselves to the fact recruits will probably love all of these new unis. Call us haters but we’d describe the first round of Maryland’s new uniforms and the ones it wore Monday night as “dumb and dumber.”

Marketing and merchandising!!!! Plain and simple. This gives the team, aka Under Armor, a chance to sell another variety or two or four, to the public. Why does the NFL carry so many game day uniforms,and retro uniforms, because they just can’t decide what to wear???? Love or complain all you want about the jersey’s, they will change, this season or next season, or when the public tires of buying that color. As the great Mel Brooks said in” Space Balls, the Movie”, ” Moy-chan-dizing, boys, Moy-chan-dizing. Ya gotta luv it !!!”

  Look, I’m a woman…and I like flashy, but my gosh! Maryland looked like a taxi cab and an ambulance slammed into each other and produced these hideous uniforms! I could not even focus on the game because I kept being distracted by the colors! Then to top it off, they scan down to the shoes….and, oh my. Either the unis or the shoes people. Not both!

Those strange, schizophrenic uniforms are hideous. The Terps looked like a cross between court jesters and a pack of playing cards. All that was missing were pixie boots with bells on the toes. I sincerely hope that those uniforms were simply the alternate ones teams roll out on special occasions. They could have waited until Halloween, though.

Personally, I liked the uniform. MUUUUCH MUCH better than that gaudy POWER RANGER thing that Georgia wore on Saturday… and yeah… better than those Duck uniforms with the DAYGLOW CLEATS.

Now I was looking at a website that showed all the variations that the Terps will be using and one of them had a bright yellow jersey and with the NCAA symbol on the right shoulder it make the guy look like a giant walking jar of French’s Mustard. Not good. But their black phase was awesome.

I keep looking for some variations in the traditional. Bama has had the same basic uniform for the better part of 50 years. I keep looking for them to break out with something like a HOUNDSTOOTH helmet, or a big elephant face on the jersey with raised trunk like they display on the jumbotron… or maybe the elephant face paint scheme on the helmet with the ears and trunk painted back across the helmet (a la Wolverine stripes of Michigan). Kudos to Maryland for daring to be different.

But if you dont like the new color schemes… I say blame it on NASCAR. The paint schemes on those cars are crazy.

Im a Canes fan…and though i didnt truly like the unis a lot..they were ok…i like the bold lines and colors…..they made a statement..now what i didnt like…and may have night mares for years to come…are those shoes….i can deal with everything else…but the shoooooees, oh my god…horrific. It was also a good game…both teams played well, Kudos to Marlyand with a nice win. Good Luck this year.

Nothing wrong with being a little bold, but after the disorientation from the pattern wore off a bit, I started to look more closely…they are obviously made poorly too… If this is UA’s big statement, then the statement is that your uniforms are crap. (guessing that they were made overseas someplace.)

Man, get a life, That bunch of flashy uniforms rejects is 0-2 against two of the big boys of the western side of the SEC., The ducks would be on par with vanderbilt, kentucky and miss. state if you played down here every year. NO, I take that back. this year State would mop the floor with your fancy uniforms. Oh yeah, one more thing. Lets just suppose you are right and Auburn DID buy a national championship by buying Cam Newton. One thing you can say, unlike those ugly uniforms, at least we got our moneys worth. I live in Maryland and I thought the uniforms were great. If you’re familiar with the Maryland flag you can see that they must have created this particular version by electronically “draping” the flag over the player… pretty cool.

As a former Maryland Player (95′-96′), I wish we could have worn uniforms commemorating this awesome State — with pride and honor. I’m really looking forward to witnessing my Boyz take it to the next level. Yeah, high octane offense coupled with an aggressive defense. . . And uniforms on HGH will undoubtedly keep 4 or 5 top 100 high school prospects in-state, vice crossing the boarder.

Perfect SWAG move, TERPS! Now lets get it in.

  Being from Baltimore, MD. I loved the new look!! what a refreshing change from those old uni’s and the team seemed to be pumped up!!! If that’s what it takes to help build moral I’m all for it!!!!! i am surprised that you guys haven;t figured it out ..thank about it if your the quarterback you can at least tell which way your receivers are runnig across the field..see red i will lead the guy to the left….see checkerboard lead him to the right when your passing………just hope all that brightness doesnt scare the ball away!……good luck terps especially against clemson. iwas born in maryland but am a gamecock through and through……go gamecocks!!!!!
