We frequently highlight the songs created by fans in tribute to their favorite college teams. This, however, might be the first one we’ve highlighted which was written and performed by a Billboard-recognized singer.
Before moving to Nashville and becoming a top-selling artist, Mat Kearney was born and raised in Eugene, OR, and remains a huge Oregon Ducks fan. Most recently he applied his songwriting prowess to a diddy imploring Chip Kelly to stay at Oregon instead of going to the NFL, “Chip Don’t Go.”
“Chip don’t go / Don’t you go / To Philly, Cleveland or Buffalo / They don’t have half the heart or the jerseys,” Kearney sings, among other clever lyrics.
It’s not just the lyrics that make this song good, it’s also Kearney’s singing ability. It’s little wonder that his last two albums have both made it to No. 1 of the Christian Albums Chart.
