New Mexico Fires Coach Mike Locksley

The Mike Locksley Era at New Mexico finally came to a merciful conclusion on Sunday, as ESPN’s Joe Schad confirmed the Lobos “relieved him of his duties.”

The move was a long time coming for Locksley, who was 2-26 in two-plus seasons at the school and faced allegations of sexual harassment, threatening a student reporter and punching one of his assistants. Things finally hit rock bottom for New Mexico on Saturday when the Lobos lost to FCS Sam Houston State in overtime, 48-45, and a recruit got a DUI in a car registered to Locksley.

An offensive coordinator on Ron Zook’s staff when Illinois reached the 2008 Rose Bowl who was known for his strong recruiting, pretty much everything that could go wrong did go wrong in Locksley’s tenure in Albuquerque. In 2010, the Lobos finished 120th in total offense and 119th in total defense out of 120 teams.

After speculation by Sports by Brooks last season that Locksley would be fired and replaced by former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach, we are sure speculation will start soon that everyone’s favorite pirate will be the Lobos’ next head coach.
