In a moment that might mark the height of incompetence by the NCAA, college sports’ governing body is now investigating… itself.
The NCAA announced on Wednesday that it is suspending the investigation of the Nevin Shapiro scandal at Miami (FL) because members of the enforcement staff improperly obtained information for the investigation through a bankruptcy proceeding.
According to CBSSports.com, “The NCAA improperly retained Nevin Shapiro’s attorney to work on depositions in a federal bankruptcy case in order determine NCAA violations. ”
Needless to say, hiring the attorney for someone you are investigation is a really bad idea. The NCAA has suspended the Shapiro investigation until it completes an investigation of its own enforcement staff.
As the most reviled sports organization in the country, the NCAA just became a bigger laughing stock.
