Former center Dikembe Mutombo spent so many years blocking shots — first as a star at Georgetown and then in the NBA for 18 seasons — that most people aren’t accustomed to seeing him do anything else. Which made his appearance in GEICO’s Super Bowl commercial an appropriate one.
In the ad, Mutombo blocks everything. A crumpled piece of paper being thrown into a waste bin; laundry tossed into a hamper; change deposited into a toll booth; a used coffee filter thrown into a trash can; a box of cereal placed into a shopping cart; and finally the “G” in “GEICO” flashing across the screen at the ad’s conclusion.
The tagline: Folks that save hundreds of dollars by switching to GEICO are “happier than Dikembe Mutombo blocking a shot.” It was one of the Super Bowl’s best ads with the help of one of the most beloved basketball players in recent memory. Dikembe Mutombo profile
