Six Schools Unveil Pro Combat Unis

After mixed reviews on the Nike Pro Combat uniforms for Georgia, Boise State and Oregon, Nike has unleashed the combat uniforms for Michigan State, LSU, Ohio State, Stanford, Navy and Army that will be worn this fall.

Once again, we are split on the results.

Michigan State’s uniforms are flat-out ridiculous. It features a gold, er, bronze helmet with hunter green jerseys and black pants. Going for the Spartan warrior look, we think Nike swung and missed on this one.

Oh, and there’s this: “Echoing the cry of King Leonidas, the back of the collar is inscribed with the words ‘Molon Labe,’ the Spartans’ defiant challenge to the competition to ‘come and get them!’”

Right.

We give these a D-.

MSU’s Big 10 brethren Ohio State got some duds as well, featuring scarlet jerseys with ugly numbering and grey on the shoulders with a grey helmet featuring a massive scarlet stripe and numbering on the side. [UPDATE: The helmets are similar to what the Buckeyes wore from 1960-65). These look like Georgia’s recent Pro Combat unis and get a D from us.

For LSU, the look isn’t quite as drastic. It features an all-white uniform and a white helmet instead of the traditional yellow lid. But LSU has worn the white helmet before, so there’s really nothing to see here. While Nike gets credit for not destroying LSU’s traditional look, there’s also nothing new about these combat unis and helmet except an enlarged logo.

We give these a B-, with bonus points for the gloves.

As for Stanford? Well that’s one Combat uni that Nike did right.

The Swoosh gave the Cardinal an all-black helmet with a red “S” and cherry colored uniforms with black lettering. These deserve an A+.

And finally, there’s the service academies. Navy ditched their gold helmet for a white lid with an anchor on it, which harkens back to its look from 1961. These get a solid A from us, missing out on an A+ only because of the amateurish number font. We hope to see these helmets again in the future.

Lastly, there’s Army. We’re still trying to figure out what’s different about these uniforms from its normal gear, aside from the military stripping on the arms. These get an incomplete because they don’t even look finished.

What’s your take?

Michigan State and Stanfords are bad-a**. LSU… nothing special.

  • Sparty

Michigan State’s original colors used t be black and gold. Nike came up with a uniform that honors tradition and embodies the original Spartans. Do your research, our uniforms give more of a nod to the schools history than anyone else’s.

Ohio State’s honor the history of the 1961 National Championship team as well.

Wow, you guys are harsh, outside of Oregon, nobody has dared to mess with the traditional Football uniform for decades. I like the out of the box thinking, people who say “it’s screwing with tradition” need to look at the history of their team’s uniforms. I guaranty that there have been some major changes in style and design and even color. Maybe Nike/Under Armor didn’t get them all right on the first try. I believe the new uni’s will continue to evolve and get better and better. Who of us, is 100% on our fist attempt and have never had to make improvements?

    Go Navy Beat Army

I think the Michigan State Uniforms look really REALLY great!!! Can’t believe they were graded so low. Shoots, I would want to suit up in that uniform every game. This batch of combat uniforms from Nike, I think may be the best of the bunch since they started doing this. Stanford is a great change, and makes the Cardinals look tough, rather than a school with smart students and an awkward mascot, that just so happens to have a good QB. The service academy duds are okay, nothing too special. LSU’s uni’s are solid, while Ohio State is my least favorite.

    Good research guys! #sarcasm….

The Ohio State uniforms are a lot like the 1961 team they are honoring. Honestly, these look nothing like Georgia’s Pro Combat uniforms…Nice try though

  • ScarletGrey

I had to laugh when I saw the “S” on the Stanford gloves. Probably only an Ohio State fan will remember year before last when OSU was penalized for excessive celebration for having a block “O” when a player put his forefingers and thumbs together after a TD.

  • Badger21

Good thing MSU and OSU have fancy new uniforms to look forward to this season, because they have nothing to look forward to in the big ten, neither are getting past Wi.

      What happened last year

If you can’t see differences between Army’s current unis and the ones revealed today, you need to see an eye doctor.

  • PerformanceMD

Say it isn’t so! My Spartans have come aboard, well let’s see how creative can y’all get at Nike with might Green and White! I love the new look on college football, if the do it on Madden2k12 and NBAlive it should be done in reality, fans learn about, the purchase off new gear to wear to show you team
Spirit while in or out of college! The tradition of college football is going corporate.

  • GreenandWhite

they also did an awful job grading MSU’s. The pro combats for MSU go back way back in MSU tradition honoring the spartan history and FYI its not gold…its BRONZE. The same material that Spartans use for their shields. DO MORE RESEARCH BEFORE YOU BASH SOMETHING.

The Michigan State Spartans have as much in common to the real life Spartan Warriors as much the Trojan condom has to the Trojan warriors of past. Just because you named yourself after some of the greatest warriors in history, does not make you or your school worthy of the name.

  • Submarine Sailor

The Navy font is the font used on the side of boats. I think they look the best out of all of them. Of course I’m being utterly bias. BEAT ARMY!

  • Eagle509

To me, all of the pro combat series uniforms on display in this article are nice. MSU, LSU, OS, & SU uniforms are realll nice. I like Navy’s setup, but the numbers on the jerseys are so non-warrior like, instead they are more cartoonish.

  • Doug

They’re all hideous, and I’m so thankful they only wear them for one game. They look like something out of a bad Sci Fi movie.

  • PersonWithEyes

They all look sweet with the exception of LSU’s. That is the uni that is unfinished. It is way to bland for a Pro Combat jersey.

  • anonymous

None are as awesome as the uniforms Oregon debuted against LSU. However, the Stanford and Michigan State are pretty great. Definitely not huge on Ohio State’s or Army’s (as stated they look pretty close to the regular uniforms). LSU’s new uniforms are pretty nice, but the helmet is great.

  • THAToneGUY

These unis are sick! The MSU and Standford are the best but the others are tight to. I like OSU’s old school look

  • LongGrayLine

The Army unis are too similar to their present ones. I wish they kept the camo helmets they wore a couple of seasons ago against Navy. and updated the shirts and pants.

Note to SEC,,,,,,,Please Leave the tradition,,,,,UGA Looked worse in the uniforms then losing to Boise while wearing them,,,,,hard to believe LSU has sold out as well.
