Maryland Black Field Design Surfaces

The Maryland football team set fashion back 20 years last fall with ridiculous uniforms and helmet combinations that matched a hideous 2-10 season for the Terrapins and there are rumors that the field at Byrd Stadium will be getting a Boise State-style makeover for this fall.

Check out the photos below that a fan designed and posted onto a message board for Byrd Stadium of a black field with a turtle-shell design on it and end zones draped with a variation of the state flag.

Boise State is legendary for its blue “Smurf Turf” that has been a great marketing gimmick for the Broncos during their rise to national prominence and FCS Eastern Washington followed suit with a red field but a black field with a turtle-shell design is completely insane. So clearly we fully expect Maryland to use this design (or what about one gigantic state flag design?)

Given the hot and humid summers in the Washington, D.C. area, Maryland’s football players will feel like they are playing in an oven for the team’s season opener against William and Mary on September 1st if this field design is legitimate. What would be next? A giant retractable turtle-shell dome to keep Byrd Stadium cool during September games?

Hey, that’s not a bad idea…

Noooooooo! Must be a green field.

    • Rob

Really? There is no rule requiring a green field.

  • JoRoWi

    Irrelevant team, irrelevant idea.

  • joe fan

This is good news for the ACC. If Maryland does this it will show how out of touch they are with football traditional. No way the Big Ten would invite them to join their conference in the future.

    • stray923

Big ten- irrelevent teams, irrelevent ideas. SEC ALL THE WAY!!!

  • lol

it was an idea floated by a fan with a graphics package and too much time on his hands. it is also silly season in college football, if it was in the middle of the football season would you have even clicked on the lick?

  • Chris Burr

Awesome Idea, The Field would look awesome like that design and maybe even cooler than the blue turf, red turf or the purple and silver turf etc….

  • And?

So a fan comes up with an idea on a message board and it becomes news. Like that’s never happened before. Sports journalism; especially as it relates to blogs, are absolutely awful these days.

Some fan comes up with an idea about a team going from one conference to another and then the blogs pick it up which is then picked up by major websites saying that a certain team is rumored to be going to another conference.

Just a couple of examples as to the death of sports journalism in this country.

ncaa now rules no more non green synthetic turf. this is just a graphics design anyone can do. natural field this color would die pretty quickly without enormous financial care and UM does not have it. why would anyone take time to even report this…

    • Rob

That’s not true. A ruling was never made.

But, since you are so much smart than us all, provide a (real) link. Something from ESPN or Sports Illustrated or any other Sports media would be the best.

      Go on, now.

  • T Dogg

It’s ugly period. Just like the football and lacrosse helmets/jersey’s.

    Hideous, gag.

  • WoW

That field is going to be 1000 degrees.

  • Anonymous

last i checked, arnt turtles green?, plus turf is naturally about 10 degrees hotter than natural grass, so make it all black, i would not want to play on that

  • Rob M

Why is this writer acting like its actually going to happen? There is no way that Maryland could use this anyways because it has been banned to use artificial colors. Boise State and eastern Washington were grandfathered
    In.

  • Willie

This idea is BAD,BAD,BAD !! Football fields that aren’t green are hideous. The one at Boise State looks like something an Arena League team owner designed during a bad acid trip. The weird college uniforms that have become a fad are bad enough.Football fields painted school colors should be made illegal !!

  • Friarjack61

Black absorbs heat, reflects same ! Must be a design student, who never has physics.

    • Rob

Huh? “Black absorbs heat, reflects same”

Um, no. It EITHER absorbs or reflects. Light colors reflect. Dark colors absorb. Apparently, YOU never had any science.

      • Chickenjack59

I suspect that the good friar meant “radiates,” not reflects. Never mind. The point is well taken, if not well made. A black field would be a nightmare in the daytime. So, the obvious solution is having only night games?

  • Bruce

I think it’s awesome! Great going and a home field advantage as well!

  • Anonymous

With ALL the ridiculous micromanaging NCAA rules, there is not one that says the grass playing area should be green!

  • SnideRemarks

A more interesting field than either Boise State or Eastern Washington is the one at University of Central Arkansas (UCA) in Conway, Arkansas.

    See it here:

  • Falcon

will it be called the “Dancel Field” wow!!

    • Vitoria

Completely agree. And O/T, nice to see another bogilgng Dons fan.Reguar political acoommodation might be hard for you & me to reach, I think, but let’s face it, football’s the thing that matters !

  • dale

And this is why teams like FSU, Clemson, Miami and Georgia Tech are lining up to get out of the ACC. ACC does not care about football, its all about basketball.

  • Wild Dog

These party colored fields wreak havoc on the broadcasters.

  • Solid

Thought there athletic department was in financial ruin. I guess they can’t determine a need vs a want.
