Marine Screams at Texas WR Goodwin

Marquise Goodwin felt pretty good after his 69-yard touchdown run gave Texas a 17–7 lead in the second quarter of its 66–31 win at Ole Miss. Too good for one Rebels fan on the sidelines.

As Goodwin coasted in for the score, a Marine standing behind the end zone started furiously screaming at the Longhorns senior receiver. Several commenters on the InsideTexas.com game thread say that Goodwin was shushing the Ole Miss crowd, to which the Marine took offense.

Perhaps the Marine was trying to teach Goodwin some humility. That’s an admittedly difficult task considering that Goodwin would account for 182 yards and two TDs on just four touches against Ole Miss. And that he competed in the long jump at the London Olympics earlier this summer.

I love it! Great orbs moment

  • Everlori

    Hilarious!

  • Sfsnyde84

His name is Stephen Roberts. He’s a Gunnery Sergeant. I’ve known him for years. That is all

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594578997 Jon Heroux

You know, this just shows the ignorance of the American people on so many things and just how much disrespect we have for one another.  To assume that a Marine Gunnery Sergeant (an E7) wearing full dress uniform would embarrass himself and dishonor his uniform by yelling at the other team’s player scored a touchdown against his team is ridiculous.  If you watch, Marquise Goodwin threw up a salute to the Marine.  First, one does NOT salute an enlisted Marine SNCO.  Marine NCOs are fond of saying “You don’t salute me.  I am not an officer, I work for a living.”  That is basically what this Gunny is saying here “NO. You do not salute me.”  You can actually read his lips saying NO.  Second, the salute to the Marine was done is a mocking and celebratory fashion, which not only showed disrespect to the man, but his uniform and the country he serves — over a touch down.  Goodwin only did what he was supposed to do (i.e., score touch downs).  In the Marine Corps, you don’t get medals for doing what you are supposed to do, you get them for going beyond what you are supposed to do or excelling at what you are supposed to do.   Sure, Goodwin is excelling by all accounts at making touchdowns, but he doesn’t get to celebrate and he damn sure doesn’t get to do it by being a jerk who is showing poor sportsmanship and by disrespecting the honor of a Marine and his uniform.

The Marine indeed made an ass out of himself (and his Corps, since he was in uniform), probably with the aid of an excess of some really good brew.  Wouldn’t be surprised if the Gunny is getting a lesson in public behavior from his superiors, today. Howineehell would Goodwin be expected to know you don’t salute a Gunnery Sergeant.  Looked to me like the mocking salute was made in response to the Sergeant’s ridiculous attempt at dressing down a jubilant and successful athlete who was celebrating a great play.  Like it or not, that celebrating is perfectly acceptable in today’s game.  Buffoonery while in full dress…..not so much.

      • Larry_hamilton

You are absolutely correct – sorry to tell you this, but Marines have always been the most retarded members of the military. After all, they are only ground troops for our great Navy. I am X Army and have served with these idiots before.

        • ROLL TIDE!!!

As a Marine the last punk that said that within my earshot is still tying to get his jaw set straight, wanna try me boy?

          • SeriousSeriousness

Shhh, no tears now, only dreams.

          • Dtaspire

            Really breaking that stereotype.

          • Oscar

So let me get this straight, you are admitting to the fact that you broke a man’s jaw because he had an opinion that differed from yours? And you wonder why people buy into the negative stereotypes of marines.

        • DDouglas

You are EX-Army for a reason.  You couldn’t handle what the Marines dish out.  Seriously, you don’t even make an effort to put the “E” in front of the “X”. You have no right to call anybody an idiot when you can’t even spell “ex”.

        • Semper Fi

When I went through boot camp the people who couldn’t make were given a chance to inlist for the army.  Just saying….

          • Roger Stewart

How did that Army career work out for you Sad Sack?

        • Db4d1984

Excellent work generalizing an organization of over 180,000 people into one stereotype.

Since we’re generalizing, let me guess, since you’re in the Army, you’re a recovering addict with little to no education that couldn’t get into any other service because you only have a GED and have neck tattoos that you got while in a gang or in prison?

Shame on anyone who defames any of our services. All branches deserve our respect.  I appreciate the pride you fellas have for your branch, but at the end of the day you all are on the same team.

        • 0311

As a Marine, I think you are a nutless pig. I’ve served with you nasty pigs before, you’re all disgusting and apparently need to learn to PT, and shave!

    • BrianO

Jon, you are exactly correct. As soon as I saw it I said basically the exact same thing to my friends watching. If Gunny had not dressed him down he would have forever lost the respect of the men he has trained and led. While Goodwin was amazing during the game and in London, only morons (and people living in caves that don’t watch news or see when even President’s have been corrected on this) don’t know a salute is meant for officers.

    • http://yahoo rider777

You must be an ole miss fan.
The marine is being laughed at by the officers behind him…for the obvious reason that he looks kinda’ stupid.

      • Reeljazz7

Those are not HIS officers. Those would be Highway Patrol Officers…

        • http://yahoo rider777

          No, they are police “officers”.

    • JoeB

What a joke. He was NOT saluting, quick coming up with BS excuses to pat yourself on the back.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=694653784 Keith Merrill

he never threw up a salute, he put a finger up to his lips to shush the crowd, the marine told him NOOOOOOOOO, the crowd will not be quiet!! get some glasses!!

    • Paulieoneshoe

Well maybe we are ignorant but you just prove it with your comment. You jump to conclusions way to fast “you can read his lips” well one everyone knows lip reading isnt 100% again you prove this because he actually said you do t SHUSH a marine because Goodwin put his finger over his lips to quiet the crowd I would assume.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OIETDA6TEJLP4DESVGEZTOIULU Mike The Tiger

Gunny says no! Not on my ball field! That’s OK, but it still doesn’t look too professional.  This isn’t basic.

  • Roger Stewart

Can’t help but love them Marines!

  • Hoskinsld

Goodwin went to shush the ole miss crowd and the marine got pissed, end of story. I doubt a football player is going to go out of his way to disrespect a person serving our country after scoring a touchdown

    • Umballa-tongueclick

It’s so hard to convey sarcasm through typing, however, I sense it here.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.swatzell.3 Joe Swatzell

Let me guess. The Army also invented sex…and the Marine Corps introduced you to doing it with women.

  • Kwiknlethal1

Foolish. Not him. You. He explained why he did it, the player was looking directly at him to shush him. I served two combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. You have done what Jon Heroux? Not a damn thing. I would love to see you or anyone else try to shush me.

  • Yellowthingrules

Wow only took you one sentence to contradict yourself. I guess that makes you the moron and a hypocrit.

  • Minineal2

I read about this in the marine corps times. It’s motivating everyone.
