Like many teams before them this season, New Mexico is dressing for the occasion when it hosts Wyoming for its “Heroes Day” game on Saturday.
The Lobos’ normal helmets have been given a stars-and-stripes pattern down the center, and both the logo and the “Lobos” that runs above it are colored in with red, white and blue.
Whereas New Mexico’s lobo logo normally looks angry as a way of intimidating opponents, with the blue-and-white patterning it looks annoyed at being painted with ridiculous colors.
The best comparison we can think of is what Texas-San Antonio did for their patriotic helmets. But UTSA shaded in select parts of the Roadrunner logo rather than lazily imposing stripes of different hues like New Mexico did.
What the Lobos have as a finished product falls flat. Grade: C-
