Les Miles Rips QB Recruit Gunner Kiel

If you thought Virginia Tech assistant Charley Wiles and Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly (it’s now being reported the quote was taken out of context) lacked tact in criticizing recruits that snubbed them, check out what LSU head coach Les Miles had to say about the top quarterback recruit in the country, Gunner Kiel, who switched from LSU to Notre Dame last month.

Said Miles on Wednesday about his recruiting class to Tiger fans at LSU’s Bayou Bash: “There was a gentleman that thought about coming to the Bayou state. He did not necessarily have the chest and the ability to lead a program, just so you know.”

That’s funny, Miles didn’t seem to feel that way a month ago.

  1. Roll Tide 2012 says:

Cmon Coach Miles. Can we show a little class. Maybe you should have noticed Kiel did not have “the chest” to leave the Hoosiers for your program and not gotten involved.

    • Rolling Joke says:

Really? Ask Darius Philon his opinion…

  2. football fan.. says:

well Les hes a kid and allowed to make mistakes.Staying close to home is better for some. Why would he want to play for you after that abysmal performance by you and your coaching staff at the LAUGHING STOCK NATL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. Why would he want to be the next Jarrett lee a wasted talent under your horrible coaching SOUR GRAPES LES,GO TO MARDI GRAS AND GET GROPED LOOSER..

    • Random says:

      You spelled loser wrong.

    • don marlowe says:

Lets be real about this gunner fellow, besides miles not letting lee get at least a chance or to even get jefferson thinking straight and then putting him back in when lee screwed up again. But I think its the SEC that worried gunner kiel the most. What quarterback would like to be looking up from center and seeing several very large players coming at him with beheading on their minds. Alabama would have cleaned his clock and he would be seeing stars. While at Notre Dame he won’t be playing against defences like you see in the SEC. Notre Dame usually plays one or two teams that are ok but not championship calibre teams like Alabama. Just think you could say that after all the bowl games the nation ended with #1 Alabama #2LSU #3 Arkansas……and what freshman quarterback would want to face that in the coming years….This year the rest of the nation got what they have always wanted and that is a SEC team losing in the National Championship game, but also what the SEC wanted in an SEC team winning in the National Championship game. Alabama really showed what it was made of. Alabama put LSU in their place this year with a better coaching for the big game. I have cheered for LSU all my life but now am changing my stripes after seeing Miles coaching ability…He said outside his locker room that he didn’t see that coming…and he wanted to do something to help his boys win but could think of nothing….He could of at least given the man that helped his team win their first nine games a chance. He had wanted Jefferson so bad but due to his stupid act of fighting at a local bar he was out for the first five games and Lee a backup had to step in and get the job done and did. But after throwing interceptions against alabama in the game of the century he was replaced with jefferson. Just seems like he got you to the alabama game so he should have been given a chance of playing again but Miles just couldn’t do it…….How does a college player afford 39 pairs of tennis shoes. Where does all that money come from….and according to police records they were all new….makes a mind wonder…..Go Bama beat LSU……Roll Tide Roll

      • Let's Be Honest! says:

Nick Saban is the lucky one! Collegiate Football today is about politics, money, and voting methods by a coach and colleagues that places them by VOTE in the BCS Nat’l Title Game. Gary Danielson had it right…..no team should be able to play in the title game unless that team wins out during the regular (week end – week out ) season. Saban is a snake and voted OSU down like five other coaches. Shame on Saban! It’s all about the money, not the fans….the great state of Alabama, HA! The last laugh is on the fans…so keep listening to the rhetoric.

  3. tazman1964 says:

What a punk coach, just because a kid wants to go to another college other than his he disrespects him. What a role model for his players and university.

  4. KWorld says:

Maybe it has something to do with the quality of education, Miles!

  5. bob4524 says:

I am a Notre Dame fan who also likes LSU. My opinion is after what coach Miles did this year with allowing the other kid back in and benching Jarrett Lee, I dont blame Gunner Keil for changing his mind. The same thing happened when Matt Flynn was there. I could say more but everyone knows that I am correct on this.

    • Anonymous says:

You are correct. And look what Flynn did in the last reg. game for green bay. Something Rodgers or farce never did.
Good luck on the season in ND

  6. duhboy says:

lsu so lucky …. so stupid

    • Does It Really Matter? says:

Miles does do and say very unorthodox things. Given. Miles and the program are not lucky, nor stupid. 13-1, West Division Champs, SEC Champs, and a very bad BCS outing is in the books! If you are or are not an SEC fan, doesn’t matter……if you played against LSU this season, you lost at least ONCE! Get a life!

  7. Random says:

It has a lot more to do than that. LSU had 5 scholarship players graduate in December, which means they can give 5 scholarships in January to players enrolling early. Not only did he commit early, but he told LSU he would enroll early. They held a spot for him for early enrollment causing a log jam of players coming in for January. One of the top recruits de-committed because he couldn’t enroll early and receive a scholarship. Two days later Gunner enrolls at Notre Dame. That’s why Les is upset. I don’t have a dog in the fight, but the kid committed to 3 diiferent schools in 2 months.

and BTW, he says “lead a program” Meaning he couldn’t lead a program in the SEC. Not “Leave Indiana”.

  8. Les Miles Sux says:

He should be worried about why his team was just an embarrassment in the Championship game. I’m sure he was also kissing Kiel’s ass to get him to come there in the first place, and now it’s different because he changed his mind. At least he didn’t leave you hanging until NSD. Stop being such a b***h Les.

  9. Mike says:

Very typical classless statement by Miles. He openly berates an 18 (maybe even 17) about wavering on the most important decision of his life. Very sad.

  10. BC Is Me says:

We all know now why Gunner didnt go to the “bayou” state Leslie – It was because of you LOOSER…..

  11. Hoosier fan says:

Miles is a two faced moron. He didn’t seem too upset when Gunner decommited from Indiana first and selected LSU.

What a complete tool Miles is. Way to show your true colors…

  12. tim says:

les quit crying! don’t you know they are all liars until they sign that loi and you get the fax. like you have never lied to any of your recruits or players….qb lee

  13. Huh? says:

I don’t understand what the author of this post is talking about. From what I can understand, Les Miles is saying that he thinks Gunner Kiel ultimately did not have strength of character (“chest and ability”) to leave his home state to go to LSU. Last month, Gunner was committed to LSU. Under those circumstances, why would Les have been complaining that Gunner didn’t have the “chest and ability” to leave Indiana?

  14. scott says:

Can’t really blame the kid. They finailly got cable TV drug out there to the farm in Indiana and Kiel cough a couple of re-runs of Swamp People. Poor kid was so spooked he had his mom call Miled to cancel the deal.

  15. Joe says:

I love LSU but that ain’t cool. Neither is the fact of not trying Lee in the NC game after your boy wasn’t doing anything. At least give him a shot. Give jj a break and let Lee try and finish the year off the same way he started. What a sour guy.

  16. caller12345 says:

Miles, Remember what goes around comes around, remember what you did to Jarrett Leethe better QB you left on the bench

  17. blayd says:

Interesting that a coach is allowed to insult or put-down an 18 y.o. kid but if a teacher or another kid were to do so there are mass consequences. Priorities coach, priorities.
And how will your commitment stand when you get “the next best thing” offered to you? Will you stay or will you go? Only time will tell (and history has)!

  18. Big Buck 33 says:

I find the Sec a joke. This is another example of football is everything in the south. Les Miles has obviously ate or smoked too much grass. How could you bust out a teenager in the national media over something so stupid? What a class act he is. I have two boys that are top lineman recruits and guess who they won’t be playing for EVER. College should be about education and making lifelong friendships. I hope this kid kicks LSU’S butt when they play and does the superman shirt rip in Miles face at the end of the game. Now that would be funny. By the way Big Ten Football is on the rise and the SEC is’nt pulling the recruits from up north they used to so we will see how much more Les and all the rest of the conference has to whine about over the next five or so years.

    • markg6078 says:

Big Ten Football is on the rise….SEC is not pulling the kids from the north…. and you have TWO top lineman recruits? Who is smoking grass? Thanks for the laugh! Back to topic. I have to wonder if that NCG was the turning point for Miles? Like Tuberville, Fulmer, and others before, there comes a time when things turn against a coach and the spiral starts to go the other way. Why would top offensive players come to LSU when it is obvious there is no development or chance to shine on the horizon for them?

    • Mumble says says:

Keep your two kids. With your interference who needs them.

  19. Jim says:

It takes a lot of balls for any overpaid coach to call out people that are basically “indentured football servants” under the guise of a free education.

  20. Randy says:

    Geeez Coach Miles,
This guy is just a kid out of high school. I know your sore because you lost the Natl. Championship but dont take it out on the kids. Only a red-neck would do something like that.

    • Mumble says:

Miles is an Ohioan who went to Michigan. Give us rednecks a break.

  21. Boddington says:

Bravo Miles! The “kid” is 18 years old now which makes him a man so that whole problem is a non-issue. I respect Miles for speaking his mind. If the guy didn’t want to come to a school where he would control a team that is litterally a QB away from a national title then thats fine. I wish there were more coaches that spoke their minds like this.

  22. Mumble says:

I have to defend Les here. He went out on a limb for the guy and asked another recruit to wait until August to enroll (and he prompltly enrolled at Auburn) and then he pulls his crawfish act and backs out. I hope he and ND get what they deserve and it won’t be pretty.

  23. Mumble says:

I can see Gunner coming up to the line of scrimmage now. He calls a pass play in the huddle, audibles to a run at the line of scrimmage and then has the ball hiked to him and he punts. What a classless loser.

  24. Dave The Rave says:

Gunner met a few LSU players, and they were majoring in football officiating and couldn’t talk. SEC=special education conference. And Miles being from Ohio and going to school up north—-can’t be too bright. Long live the SEC—-no classes to attend, big money, then it’s off to work as a janitor or selling food stamps.
