Kentucky’s spirits were down after a 30-point blowout loss at Tennessee, after which John Calipari called some of his players “uncoachable.” Prior to Wednesday’s game against Vanderbilt, Coach Cal arranged for a team-bonding activity that would get his team happy again: Dodgeball.
“We’re not competing at the level that we need to,” Calipari explained in the video of the game, which you can watch in its entirety here. “Part of that is because of the anxiety of being a little bit tentative. So we played dodgeball. And after they were done I said, ‘Why don’t you go on the basketball court and have that much fun playing basketball?’ ”
Just to be safe, Calipari donned a football helmet for the game, rationalizing that he needed it because he was a little older.
The ploy seemed to work, as Kentucky defeated Vanderbilt, 74–71, for a much-needed win. Calipari already has another similar activity lined up prior to the team’s Saturday game against Missouri: Wiffle ball.
Whatever works, coach.
