West Virginia Mountaineers fans take as much pride in their state, if not more, as they do in their athletic teams. That has apparently fallen on deaf ears among their new Big 12 Conference rivals.
While taking in a football practice at WVU’s Week 8 opponent, Kansas State, ESPN.com senior writer Mitch Sherman quoted Wildcats wide receiver Chris Harper as saying that his teammates debated whether West Virginia is, in fact, one of the 50 states.
Visited K-State today. A highlight: WR Chris Harper said a few Wildcats debated whether West Virginia is, in fact, one of the 50 states.

Harper, by the way, said he was on the right side of the argument. And he knew the capital.

ESPN’s Brad Nessler committed the same geographical faux pas on live TV in January but don’t be shocked to see Mountaineers fans make Kansas State players pay for the mistake when they visit Morgantown on Saturday.
