Illinois Needs to Wake Up for Shaka Smart

By Jim Weber

Let’s cut right to the chase: Bruce Weber is done coaching Illinois.

Illinois fans are already throwing out names like VCU’s Shaka Smart and Butler’s Brad Stevens to replace Weber and return the program to where it was in 2005 when Weber reached the NCAA title game with Bill Self’s old players.

But after making an uninspired hire in Weber in 2003, the Illinois administration and Illini fans need a wake-up call about the reality of their program if they are going to avoid making the same mistake twice.

Let’s start by separating fact from fiction about the Illinois program and its head-coaching position for truths that many Illini fans don’t seem willing to accept.

.

Location

Fiction: Illinois seems to believe it is fighting with Northwestern for the distinction of “Chicago’s Big Ten school” and that any coach would be honored to coach in close proximity to “The Windy City.”

• Fact: Yes, the city is painted Orange whenever the Illini come to town and has a massive alumni base there but Champaign is 140 miles south of Chicago. That’s hardly a stone’s throw away. Champaign is a cow town known as “Moo U.” and not exactly where a coach dreams of living and raising his family.

.

Recruiting

• Fiction: Coaching at Illinois is made easy because of its proximity to Chicago that has produced Illini legends like Deon Thomas and Kendall Gill.

• Fact: While players in Chicago used to dream of playing for Illinois, they certainly don’t anymore. That much has been proven with players like Derrick Rose (Memphis) and Anthony Davis (Kentucky) taking their talents elsewhere on the way to the NBA. Yes, it’s an advantage to be near a recruiting hotbed like Chicago but it hardly guarantees you will land blue-chip players. Just ask Weber about that.

.

Basketball Tradition

• Fiction: A coach should be honored to be at the best program not to win a national title as exemplified by its five Final Fours and long list of alumni in the NBA.

• Fact: Coaches aren’t in awe of the Illini’s history. Illinois is the best program n0t to win a national title, but what exactly does that mean when you consider programs like Oklahoma State, Holy Cross, Marquette, UNLV and UTEP have all cut down the nets? As for the Final Fours, only two of those have come since 1952 – the same number as Providence.

.

Support

• Fiction: The support a coach receives at Illinois is up there with the best programs in the nation as evidenced by the “Orange Krush” student section and packed houses at Assembly Hall.

• Fact: Yes, the support from the students and fans is first-rate, but that’s not what matters most these days.

They want a big pay check and sparkling facilities to attract big-name recruits and have top-of-the-line training.

Weber is paid $1.5 million a year in Champaign, which is less than Michigan’s John Beilein, Vanderbilt’s Kevin Stallings and Wisconsin’s Bo Ryan – none of whom are exactly basketball titans.

And Assembly Hall, a.k.a “The Flying Saucer,” is an aging dinosaur that was built in 1962 and doesn’t even have air conditioning. The Board of Trustees recently approved a $2.2 million contract for a renovation design but that’s a long way from actual work being done. In 2002, a $66.8 million renovation was turned down. By comparison, Kentucky is looking at a $300 million renovation of Rupp Arena.

.

Coaching Job Prestige

• Fiction: Because of all these misconceptions, Illinois fans believe the Illini coaching job is in the second cut of college basketball coaching gigs with Syracuse, Michigan State, Connecticut, Louisville, Georgetown and Arizona right behind the blue bloods (North Carolina, Kentucky, Duke, UCLA, Kansas, Indiana).

• Fact: Illinois is squarely in the third cut of jobs with the likes of Maryland, Villanova, Purdue, Pitt and NC State. And you see the trouble both NC State and Maryland had filling their jobs last year with the inability to land Shaka Smart at either place.

.

Case in point: What does it say about the Illinois job that then-Marquette coach Tom Crean wasn’t interested in 2003 and then took the job at Indiana with the program on its knees and huge NCAA sanctions looming over it? The result was hiring Weber, a woefully under-qualified coach from Southern Illinois.

So just where does that leave us?

It just so happens that the People’s Choice to replace Weber at Illinois is Smart, who considered Chicago a second home while growing up in Madison, WI, and already soaked up the love from Chi-town fans by belting out “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” at Wrigley Field.

But as he evidenced last year, Smart isn’t going to take the Illinois job just because it’s Illinois (the Illini face even longer odds with Brad Stevens). Heck, Smart is currently making $1.2 million per year now at VCU.

And don’t put it past him to stay in Richmond another season with the possibility of openings at programs like UCLA, Connecticut and Texas in a year.

To paraphrase Jay-Z: They say money talks, so Illinois athletic director Mike Thomas needs to speak up in his pursuit of Smart.

Thomas should start by doubling Smart’s current salary (which would still be less than Thad Matta makes) and politicking with the Board of Trustees so that Thomas can confidently tell Smart Assembly Hall is going to get a massive facelift. With the amount of money pumping into Big Ten schools through the Big Ten Network and the conference’s football championship game deal with FOX Sports, there’s no excuse not to step up to the plate and make a home run hire with Smart.

Because if Illinois doesn’t have a wake-up call and ends up with another second-rate hire that results in more mediocrity, it only has itself to blame.

You are ridiculous. Get your facts straight. getting something as easy as knowing where Eric Gordon is from wrong shows me the rest of your article is ludicrous. ….and I am proven right. There are huge faults in ever one on your points. Do some research before you open your mouth (or type). Read a book. Educate yourself. And then get a job.

  • John Chris

    Mr. Weber,

While it is tempting to dismiss much of you opinion as that of a Michigan graduate I canoot disagree with some of which you wrote.

However, as a former fact checker, I would have thought that you would have checked the fact that Eric Gordon is from Indianapolis and not Chicago and that Tom Crean was never offered the Illinois job despite his public comments that he was not leaving.

While Illinois is indeed and agricultural school, it is hardly Moo U. It is also one of the finest research institiutions in the world who faculty and alumni has brought us such things as the transistor, the internet browser, the LED, the MRI and the plasma screen.

Assembly hall is one of the largest edge-suppoted domes in the world, designed by an Illinois alumnus who also designed Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center and the UN Secretariat building. Cameron Indoor just recently received air conditioning as will Assembly Hall when renovations are complete. Aging, yes – a dinosaur, no.

Good try making the Illini opening sound bad, you must be an Indiana fan or something. Next time you write an article, maybe you should quit using bias, or maybe you should just try not to totally bash a team. This is unprofessional as it gets.

  • Bing Tsang

Why would Illinois go out and try to hire a “name” coach? In football, they had Mike Leach’s phone number and wouldn’t call him and instead chose to hire the Toledo coach from the MAC. Brad Stevens is basketball mirror image of Chris Peterson at Boise State. Great coach but can’t smooze 4-5 star athletes. He would be a huge failure at IU and he knows it. He’ll stay put. They need a recruiter who might land them a tournament ban for 1-2 years, look at what Calipari has done. Maybe Bruce Pearl after he sits out another year? Their biggest mistake was not promoting Wayne McClain when they hired Weber. McClain won 4 high school titles in Illinois at Peoria Manual and could have got the 4-5star guys from Chicago and Peoria in there.

Please provide evidence that Tomn Crean was offered the job at Illinois in 2003 — or that Illinois was even intereted in Crean. Calling a press conference and saying you’re not interested is not evidence of either.

It would help if your work was factual.

First off Weber makes nearly 2 million a year a repeatedly turned down pay increases so he could keep assistants. Secondly how is Champaign that much different from Ann Arbor, east Lansing, Bloomington, etc? Thirdly the state of Illinois produces quite a bit more D-1 talent than players Calipari pays to come play for him.

  • Zack

Hahaha you amuse me Mr. Weber :)

  • James

Mike Thomas is the one who needs FIRED!!! He says he researches his coaches whole body of work. The only problem is he has NEVER researced Illinois whole body of work!! He single handly is trying to ruin the athletic programs at Illinois. Fire Thomas before it is to Late!!!!

  • Moo U Grad

“Champaign is a cow town known as “Moo U.” and not exactly where a coach dreams of living and raising his family”.

I certainly hope Mr. Weber that journalism is nothing more than a minor hobby for you. Making statements like the above would merit an F in an introductory writing class (college or high school). That is unless this article was written entirely in jest.

Hope your real job is going well.

  • uconn is not a better job than illinois

uconn is a much smaller school with a much smaller fanbase in a much smaller town than c-u (btw you’re the only person i’ve ever heard refer to it as “moo-u”) and competes with a lot more programs for recruits. They’re basically Calhoun and will go back to irrelevance after he’s fired.

Also, I’m not sure Anthony Davis and Derrick Rose are the best examples since it was proven that Memphis cheated to get Rose and there were heavy rumors Anthony Davis cost $200k ( rumors, yes. but they were reported in the chicago tribune). I wouldn’t want Illinois getting either of those players if it required cheating.

  • SheBlueDevil

Two things I realized after reading your piece:

    1. The real Michigan difference is that they do not prepare you to separate fact from fiction.

    2. Journalist bias is almost as bad as waking up next to someone ugly at 5 am with a pounding headache.

  • Illini Alum in Moo U, Indiana

The one thing you got right in the article was that Bruce was a “uninteresting” hire in 2003….oh….and your map inset showing where CU is was spot on….But really Jim….I had to laugh with the Indiana blue blood comment….great team under Bobby yes….and one lucky year (with Bob’s team) under Mike Davis….but really…Mike who….Kelvin Sampson…and the guy who looks like a used car salesman and according to you was offered the Illini job…Tom Crean…..forget blue blood…more like Real Housewives of Bloomington!!! Oh my…you are a stitch….hope your day job is going well.

    • Indiana =Blueblood Moo U=failure of a program

      IU 5 championships>Moo U 0

      that is all

  • Shaka Smart

This article is what you could call absolute crap. Nothing more than just a smear campaign from another school’s fan. Don’t worry I’ll be there next year to restore them back to their rightful place.

  • Vandellish

I’m a native of Champaign (now reside in Chicago) and a casual fan of the basketball program. I’ve never felt an affinity for ANY team simply because they reside in close proximity to me but I do follow the Illini when they have good players and are entertaining (not always the case here). I feel that much of what is written here is true aside from the Tom Crean claim (I don’t know exactly what happened there).
Illinois simply needs to pay up. There’s no excuse for not paying Smart, Stevens or another up and coming young superstar coach the big bucks to come to Champaign. Sorry fans but Illinois IS INDEED a 3rd tier program and would only become a 2nd tier program by winning a national title. They have a chance to become a top tier program by winning multiple national titles over a span of 5 or 6 years all while remaining in title contention in the surrounding years. If they don’t stay in real title contention in the years after then they’ll remain in the 2nd tier (ala UConn or Florida). This is true for all schools and not just Illinois.
If Illinois really wants to get serious about their basketball program they have to be more aggressive in their approach. BTW folks, top tier programs are those that appear on a blue chipper’s list of schools long before visits, letters and the ‘wooing’ process. Sorry to say but Illinois has never been that though they do have a chance in basketball…the first step is hiring a coach who’s voice is not annoying as hell. Seriously, I find it hard to listen to Weber for 5 minutes so I feel for these players who have to listen to him every day at practice.

  • VATech8

Sorry guys you will not get Shaka. If he wouldn’t leave VCU for Maryland/ NC State he is not going to a horrible Big 10 team. Ill. fans need to stop living in the past.

    • Anonymous

Agreed. VCU gave him 6 years and is constructing a $9 million training facility. The Seigal Center just had a renovation and they sold out every home game. He’s in a good spot with a conference that’s always winnable. I can’t believe Shaka would leave after the commitment the school has made to him.

      Go Rams!

  • GoIllini

Fact: Illinois is at worst the #14 college basketball program of all time.

    http://alioneye.com/2012/02/15/were-illinois-basketball/

Fact: At the beginning of the season, BasketballReference.com listed Illinois as the #5 college basketball program of the last 31 years.

    http://www.basketball-reference.com/blog/?p=8212

Getting a high-profile coach to come to Champaign should not be nearly as difficult as some would have us believe.

  • pdboy

    Screw all you Illinois haters.
