Well, at least new Illinois coach Tim Beckman knew the words to “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” And he was enthusiastic.
Aside from that, his cameo during the seventh inning of Illini Day at Wrigley Field on Saturday was murder on the ears.
Wisely realizing that Illinois hired him away from Toledo for his coaching ability and not his vocal chops, Beckman said in a post-“Ballgame” interview, “Thank goodness I’m a football coach and not a singer.”
And thank goodness he wasn’t as bad as Ozzy Osbourne. That said, if either Beckman or Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald wants to use music in their quest to conquer Chicago, they should leave it to their schools’ a cappella groups.
