When you’re eighth among all NCAA FBS quarterbacks in passing yardage, people tend to know your name.
But that’s no guarantee that those same people know how to pronounce it.
This was a common problem encountered last year by Texas Tech’s Seth Doege (DAY-gee), who threw for over 4,000 yards and 28 TDs for the Red Raiders. In anticipation of Doege’s senior season, Tech’s athletic department put together a video that it hopes will put the pronunciation woes to rest.
It features game footage of Doege’s 2011 season; celebrity “cameos” of Mark Wahlberg, Will Ferrell and Robert Downey, Jr. sounding clueless (though likely not from pronouncing Doege’s name); and even Rangers ace Yu Darvish proudly getting the pronunciation right on the first try — all set to the song “Teach Me How to Dougie” by Cali Swag District.
Perhaps thinking that there’s no such thing as too much viral pop music, the video closes with Doege’s personal spin on “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen: “This is crazy/Here’s my number/Call me Doege.”
And yes Seth, we agree with your prediction at the end of the video that you will be made fun of for this.
