Sports fans will always remember Homer Drew embracing his son, Bryce, after the younger Drew hit a game-winning three-pointer in the first round of the 1998 NCAA tournament for Valparaiso.
Sadly, Homer is in the news 13 years later for a much more somber reason: He and his wife, Janet, have both been diagnosed with cancer.
The news was originally tweeted by former Valpo guard Brandon Wood and then confirmed by text with Baylor coach Scott Drew, Homer’s son, by CBSSports.com. No further details are currently available, although CBS is reporting the cancer was caught early.
Homer, 67, retired as Valpo’s coach in May after 18 seasons there, after which he was succeeded by Bryce. Scott is entering his ninth season at Baylor after coaching at Valpo for one season (2002-03); he coached the Bears to the 2010 Elite Eight.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Drew family.
