Among football players, kickers aren’t particularly notorious for their off-the-field behavior. Unless, of course, you’re Virginia Tech’s Cody Journell.
The Hokies kicker reportedly caused a mass exodus from the Blacksburg Buffalo Wild Wings on Jan. 24 when he released a can of pepper spray in the restaurant — causing people to cry, cough and throw up from the can’s effects.
Jourell’s defense was that he was showing his female companion how her can of pepper spray worked. When he passed it back to her, it accidentally went off.
“Stuff like this happens,” he said. “Accidents happen.”
Journell seems to have a penchant for this kind of mischief. He was arrested in December 2011 for obtaining stolen marijuana from another Virginia Tech athlete, and in May he was found guilty on a separate charge of misdemeanor trespassing.
While Buffalo Wild Wings isn’t pressing charges, Journell might be wise to find another Blacksburg establishment for his sports-watching and food needs.
